Queer Joy and Social Work: Shifting Perspectives, Supporting Inclusion

As part of Pride Month, the Institute of Social Work of the HES-SO Valais-Wallis organises the conference Queer Joy, Sexualities and Resistance in Social Work on 5 June 2026 in Sierre.

The conference looks at queer sexualities through the lens of joy, resistance and professional practice. Its aim is to support more inclusive, reflective and empowering approaches in social work.

Shifting perspectives

By focusing on the concept of queer joy, the conference takes a positive approach that moves beyond narratives centred solely on discrimination or suffering. It highlights lived experiences, forms of resilience and spaces of creativity and freedom within queer communities.

At a time when the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are both advancing and being challenged, the event offers a timely perspective by bringing together academic insights, professional practice and perspectives rooted in civic engagement.

A day for exchange and reflection

The conference is aimed at social work professionals, students and anyone interested in issues related to sexual and gender diversity. The program combines expert inputs, opportunities for exchange and participatory formats.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • deepen their understanding of queer realities
  • explore practical tools for more inclusive practice
  • engage with perspectives from both research and professional settings

The program includes time for discussion and audience participation, creating an open and collaborative space for dialogue.
