Every child has a right to education on the basis of equal opportunity. Accordingly, in meritocratic systems, educational outcomes should be directly related to individual merit. However, it is well established that educational achievement and attainment depend on a variety of factors, including non-merit factors such as socioeconomic origin, immigrant status, and gender. This seminar will provide insights into research on causes, correlates, and consequences of educational inequalities. Those insights stem from a multidisciplinary field of study that includes social and developmental sciences.
