Women in Sports Journalism in Switzerland. How to Negotiate Male Passions?
Abstract
This article presents the results of a socio-ethnic survey of the French-speaking daily sports press. It brings to light two different types of vocations among sports journalists in the context of a feminization of this professional group : while men talk about sports journalism as a vocation stemming from a passion for sports, women more often claim their love for writing and journalism. These contrasted vocations play a fundamental role in the gendered power relations within sports editorial boards by building the legitimate definition of the profession on a passion for sports and by preventing women journalists’ conversion through this professional socialization model, they keep women in subordinate positions and exclude them from decision-making roles on editorial boards.
