The Network Gender Studies Switzerland consists of representatives of the universities of Basel, Berne, Fribourg Genève, Lausanne, Neuchâtel, St. Gallen and Zurich, as well as the Institut de Hautes Etudes Internationales et du Développement (IHEID). The objective of the network is the sustainable institutionalization of gender studies at Swiss universities and the training of a new scientific generation in this field. Prof. Dr. Andrea Maihofer of the University of Basel has been the head of the network until 2016 (Deputy Head: Prof. Dr. Bettina Dennerlein of the University of Zurich). Project-specific funding from the federal government from 2002 to 2016 supported the network. It was part of the SUK programme P-4 “Equal Opportunity of women and men at universities / Gender Studies” which ran from 2013 to 2016.
Among the universities and higher education institutions in Switzerland the network Gender Studies is a pioneering project because it has continuously developed and expanded a national teaching service on three levels (BA, MA and PhD). The coordinated courses between the universities are high-profiled and interdisciplinary and are supported by teaching cooperation programmes. Additionally the Network Gender Studies Switzerland has developed innovative research programmes and promotions of early stage researchers, which have been very successful over the past years.
Since 2017 the network is open to all universities. The new chairwomen are Patricia Purtschert (University of Berne) and Marylène Lieber (University of Geneva). Gender Campus is responsible for the coordination.
