Women in the Swiss army. A socialization to male dominance
Abstract
This paper addresses the political socialization of women voluntarily enrolled in the Swiss Army, a military system with compulsory service for every male citizen. The army, as a gender regime, establishes a specific structure of power relations and specifically, gender relations. We will here explore the characteristics of this regime and its specific gendered norms, and how women experience socialization to male domination, as dominated subjects. Indeed, confronted with this monosexual and heteronormative sphere, they have to deal with a system that portrays military women as “misfits” or even “intruders.” Through observations and interviews, we will analyze how these women legitimize their place in military ranks, whilst internalizing the universal domination of men over women.
