Tire-lait ou biberons romains? Fonctions, fonctionnalités et affectivité
Abstract
Breast-pumps or Roman Feeding Bottles ? Functions, Functionalities and Affectivity – This article is based on practical experimentation, on our current knowledge of the physiology of lactation and of infant dietary needs, on anatomical, practical and emotional considerations, and on the re-reading of archaeological, osteological, chemical and anthropological data. Firstly, it defends the hypothesis that certain types of earthenware container, deemed to be breast pumps, are in fact baby bottles. Secondly, the study of the functionality of these containers shows that they could have been used in three different ways depending on whether the user was under six months old, over six months old, or an adult. Lastly, it offers hypotheses concerning the funerary context in which most of these containers are found.
