Sexual Harassment in Academia—A Literature Review

This chapter is based on the results of the literature study “Gender Equality Measures in Academia” (Zimmermann et al.), which was conducted in 2023 on behalf of the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation). This contribution provides an overview of the current state of research and compiles policies and best practices of various stakeholders. Thereby, gaps in research that urgently need to be filled, especially with regard to quantitative data, are highlighted, followed by a discussion on consequences of sexual harassment for organizations as well as individuals, possible interventions and ways of prevention. The chapter concludes with an urgent call to action against sexual harassment in academia.
