Queer/ing Ethnography

Content

In this course we are reading queer ethnographies, hence ethnographies centered on subjects whose intimacies and desires do not comply with perceived gendered and sexual norms. While focusing on the growing body of queer anthropological literature, sexuality studies and queer of color critique, we seek to understand “queering” as a feminist practice and a method that may interrupt (post)colonial hierarchies of ethnographic writing. Such a methodological focus requires a critical look at the inherent privileges of academic research and the epistemological premises upon which ethnographic data has been generated. The course thus aims at broadening and transforming our perspectives toward a range of (non-sexual) desires including our own as (future) writers in the field of anthropological knowledge production.
