“Employers Don’t Know What I Feel Behind that Smile”. Revisiting Resistance in the Globalised Economy of Domestic Work
This paper investigates practices of resistance in the globalised economy of domestic work. It draws on the idea that certain forms of resistance emerge in the context of relations of domination and exploitation which are inherent to the globalised economy of domestic work. Based on 80 semi-structured interviews with Filipino domestic workers who have worked in the Middle East, Southeast Asia/East Asia and Europe, this study describes the different strategies of resistance mobilised by these women in situations of servitude. This paper therefore shows how these resistances are constructed at an individual and collective level, inside and outside the home, but above all, on a daily basis through the way these women negotiate their role as domestic workers and subvert the social norms associated with this role. This research finally highlights how the dirty care allow women to defend themselves and negotiate norms of servitude.
