Towards Geographies of Drag Performance: Milestones from the Geneva Scene

This paper presents milestones for a spatial ethnography of drag performance. I analyse how the spatial dispositive is practised and negotiated, by both performers and the audience, during a key event of a 2021 Swiss Pride. I show how two types of spatialities are articulated – that of sexed and gendered bodies and that of the event’s venue – in a continuous movement between conformation and subversion of norms. This highlights how the fixity and fluidity of gender and space respond to each other in very nuanced ways that according to the bodies that are present. Beyond the geographies of drag performance, this paper proposes to open up the foundations of a theoretical and methodological reflection for research that privilege space as a core focus of the analysis of minority cultures, in the context of neoliberal appropriation of protest subcultures.
