An Introduction to the Anthropology of Human Rights

This course offers an introduction to the anthropology of human rights. It begins with a general introduction to key human rights concepts and debates and particularly engages with the growing body of anthropological theories of human rights principles and practice. The course will also draw on specific ethnographic case studies of human rights related activities and institutional practice engaging with both local realities and international spheres. These case studies will draw upon a wide range of human rights issues and topics such as gender, indigenous rights and children’s rights as they are being studied across the world.

Online mit Präsenzsequenzen Lessons are held in "attendance mode" (Präsenzunterricht). Students outside of the classroom participate through zoom or teams. If the room situation requires it, groups are formed which are taught alternately in the classroom.

Learning objectives include enabling students to familiarize themselves with ethnographic case-studies of human rights discourse and practice and ability to connect with relevant anthropological theories.
