Submissions are invited for consideration on the program of the 32nd Annual International Simone de Beauvoir Society conference to be held from 21-23 May 2027 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM on the traditional homelands of the Pueblo of Sandia. Please submit abstracts (max. 300 words) for 20-minute presentations in English, French, or Spanish for anonymized review to beauvoirconference2027 gmail com.
Submissions should include two separate documents:
- An anonymized abstract of up to 300 words with title of your contribution and 6 keywords (but no author information or affiliation!). The document should be named: Short title_SdBSC2027_abstract (E.g. Colonialism&Place_SdBSC2027_abstract).
- A separate document with the title of your contribution and author information, including name, affiliation, short bio (100 words), and contact details. The document should be named: Short title_SdBSC2027_author information (E.g. Colonialism&Place_SdBSC2027_author information).
The submission deadline is 1 December 2026. Decisions concerning the selection of participants will be sent out in mid-January 2027. All presenters must be members of the Society by the time of the conference. A virtual attendance option will be available, but in-person attendance is encouraged given the conference theme. Questions, including those about accessibility, should be directed to the conference co-directors: Dana Rognlie (President of the International Simone de Beauvoir Society) at dlrognlie gmail com and Ann Murphy (local organizer) at avmurphy unm edu.
The conference will mark the 80th anniversary of the publication of Ethics of Ambiguity, as well as Beauvoir’s trip to the United States, during which time she documented her journey in America Day by Day. This anniversary serves as an opportunity to consider the problem of coloniality in her work, travels, and reception. Submissions considering Beauvoir’s own participation in or resistance to colonizing perception—especially though not limited to the context of her travels in the American Southwest—are particularly welcome.
Beauvoir traveled extensively in New Mexico during her visit to the US. In addition to the regular conference program, we will plan an outing to one or more of the locales that Beauvoir discusses in her writings.
