“Woman, life, freedom”: A revolutionary movement in historical perspective

Since the late 19th century, Iranian society has time and again experienced upheavals and protest movements. Despite similarities, these movements have pursued, in congruency with the transformation of society, different aspirations. The uprising we are witnessing since last October is a revolutionary movement with the following characteristics: it is nationwide; it integrates different age groups, social classes and ethnicities; and it seeks an end to the Islamic Republic by pursuing gender equality, secularism, prosperity, and individual rights.
