This year's roundtable, organized in collaboration with the SAGS research network «Gender & Political Science» is dedicated to Feminist Approaches to Political Violence.

Violence has always been a central theme in gender and feminist studies, which have produced - and continues to produce - a wealth of new knowledge. Today, perhaps more than ever, feminist theoretical and methodological approaches are becoming necessary for the study of violent conflict and war. It's no surprise, then, that these themes are central to the SSGF's activities. Let us recall the 2019 bi-annual conference held at the University of Bern, and the publication that followed: “Violent Times, Rising Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Gender Perspective”, which thematizes, theorizes and analyzes violence, these gendered and intersectional aspects in a broad spectrum.
This roundtable comes at a time when violence is omnipresent in our lives and in the world. Gender studies once again play a central role in our understanding of contemporary issues: it seeks to understand the role of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality and religion, for example, in the discourse and practice of war and violent conflict. It brings together researchers and activists who insist on using feminist methods and theories to understand political violence - whether state-sponsored or not - and the structures that foster it.
We ask, at a moment where the world is witnessing one of the most egregious and unfathomable displays of state-led violence in modern history, what tools do our feminisms hold to for stronger alliance building? How do we resist the populist move against our solidarity networks, organizing, and universities?

With Maria Adriana Deiana (Centre for Gender in Politics, Queen’s University, Belfast), Umut Yıldırım (Geneva Graduate Institute, Anthropology and Sociology), Julia Palmiano Federer (ETH Zürich), Paniz Musawi Natanzi (Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Pennsylvania)

Moderated by Isabel Käser (Universität Bern) und Elizabeth Mesok (Universität Basel)
