This Summer School offers new perspectives on how to grasp and to deal with the complexities of relations of difference and inequality in a globalised world through cross-regional, transcultural and interdisciplinary dialogue between students, practitioners and experts on women, gender and diversity. It offers a detailed introduction into gender and diversity through the specific lens of transculturality and transnationality, and covers a wide range of core topics related to gender and diversity studies dealing with questions of how knowledge on and terminologies of gender and diversity are being produced, translated, transferred, and put into practice globally. To this end, the School follows three main focal points: Gender, Difference and Access to Public Space; Gender, Memory and the Production of Alternative Knowledge and Gender and Diversity Knowledge in Public and Private Organisations. All thematic sessions will be thoroughly introduced and examined from both theoretical and practical standpoints. Participants will be asked to prepare different assignments alone and in working groups, including readings, writings and exploring different site visits in Beirut.
This course is jointly organised by Pro GED, a Swiss-Arab Network on Gender Studies, and the Arab Institute for Women / the Department for Social Sciences at the Lebanese American University in the heart of Beirut. In two intensive weeks, participants will attend a total of 45h teaching hours, including different interactive assignments. The course equals a 3 credit course at LAU or a 6 ECTS European standard. Including leading experts on gender and diversity studies from Switzerland, Denmark, Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon, this course addresses advanced students (MA-level/early PhD) with at least basic knowledge in gender studies as well as practitioners working in the field of women, gender and diversity. Working language is English.
