Gender, Religion and the State in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA)

In 2021, Tunisia nominated for the first time a female head of government. In the Libyan transitional government nominated the same year, women ministers hold key positions. What does this mean for gender and politics in the MENA? How to contextualize and evaluate these developments? Building on selected background readings and looking at different regional examples, the course will inquire into the links between gender, state building and the politics of Islam in the region.
