Allgemeine Beschreibung
This module provides an overview of Islamic religious history, with a special focus on how Islamic political regimes and social groups conceptualised and dealt with different forms of diversity, from the beginnings of Islam up to the cusp of modernity. Through various primary and secondary readings, the course will deal with questions of identity formation and religious difference, orthodoxy, and heterodoxy, as well as racial, ethnic, and sexual diversity. The course as such aims to provide a survey of the diachronic and geographic experiences of being Muslim and/or living under Islam. The class will also introduce methods by way of which questions of class, gender and race can be approached historically.
Lernziel
