This interdisciplinary seminar is an introduction to Margaret Cavendish’s political thought and addresses students of political theory, political science, history, English studies and gender studies. Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, was a prolific writer and observer of English politics; as a royalist, she fled with the court to Paris and Antwerp in the years of the English Civil War (1642–1651). We shall analyse her utopian text The Blazing World and her political thought, expressed in brief texts that she called orations. She wrote about taxes, war, peace, education of children, and women’s issues.
