Medieval: The Boundaries of Love, 1200-1450

Contenu

In this class we will explore the literal and metaphorical boundaries of love in a selection of texts written between 1200 and 1450. We will focus on the types of love that can be found in medieval romance, mystical literature, and texts of religious instruction. We will discuss the themes of love and gender, marriage, courtly- and mystical love. Another important topic of discussion will be the relationship between medieval love and space, particularly the enclosed garden and the anchorhold.
