Why do women earn less than men? What causes gender segregation in occupations? What determines gender differences in preferences? This course aims to delve into these topics to understand the many ways that gender is relevant in the economy. We will do an overview of the state-of-the-art literature on gender economics, largely building upon empirical studies. We will also analyze policy interventions and potential solutions. The geographical focus is mainly on the labor markets of developed economies. We will cover topics such as gender differ-ences in labor market outcomes and educa-tion, family (children, fertility, contraception, abortion..), the historical roots of gender norms, gender bias and discrimination, parental leave policies, gender quotas, among others.
