Is the use of information and communication technologies a way for women in an alpine valley to reconcile family and professional life?
A training program specifically designed for women living in alpine valleys ran from 2006 to 2007 in the Val d’Anniviers, Switzerland. The initiative for this program came from the observation that women in these peripheral regions were disadvantaged in terms of training and jobs because of their socio-geographical situation. The aim of the training was to give participants the tools necessary to create their own micro-enterprises in a sustainable development perspective. The strategic line of this training, called parcoursArianna, focused mainly on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to ensure success and enable women to combine domestic and professional work. This article assesses whether this emphasis on new technologies to reduce the constraints attributable to residence in the mountain areas has had the desired effects for the women involved in this experience.
