| Work in Progress en Etudes Genre de l'UNIL | | 12.02.2012 | | 19 et 20 avril 2012 | | Journées d'études | | Université de Lausanne | Le Centre en Etudes Genre LIEGE organise les 19 et 20 avril 2012 des journées d’études Work in Progress consacrées aux recherches axées sur des problématiques de genre. L’appel à contributions s’adresse en particulier aux chercheur·e·s débutant·e·s des Universités de Lausanne, Genève & IHEID, Neuchâtel et Fribourg, tout en restant ouvert aux personnes extérieures. Les présentations porteront sur des questions de recherche intégrant une perspective de genre, traitées à un niveau théorique ou empirique, et seront discutées par des chercheur·e·s expérimenté·e·s dans les domaines présentés.
Chaque proposition de communication retenue donnera lieu à une présentation orale de 20 minutes, suivie de 10 minutes d’intervention d’un·e expert·e, puis d’un débat de 15 minutes avec le public.
| Les propositions de contribution (sous forme de résumé de 200 à 300 mots) sont à envoyer jusqu’au 12 février 2012 à l'adresse Centre-Liege@unil.ch (résumé en attaché, format Word ou rtf). La sélection des résumés sera effectuée avant le 5 mars 2011.
Les textes des contributions retenues devront ensuite nous parvenir au plus tard le 2 avril 2012. Composés de 2 à 5 pages A4 (soit 8’000 à 20’000 signes maximum), ces textes seront publiés sur le site internet du Centre en Etudes Genre LIEGE.

| | Forbidden Fruits, Forbidden Histories. Writing a hurried response to his friend in a classroom of the Lycée Condorcet in 1888, Marcel Proust recognised that his desire for those of the same sex was a forbidden one that went against social, moral and political convention. Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu (1913 - 27) has been widely recognised as a founding text by and for Queer Studies: whether it be the flamboyant characterisation of the Baron de Charlus or more subtle nuances visible in the narrator's own curiosity, Proust's explicit writings on homosexuality paved the way for a more open literary treatment of it. The beginning of the twentieth century witnessed experimentations in subject matter and slowly but surely, representations and portrayals of LGBT became more visible in European Literature and the Arts. At the same time as French authors such as Proust, Gide and Cocteau were transforming the literary canon, so too were their European neighbours, such as Thomas Mann with Tod in Venedig (1912) or Anna Elisabet Weirauch with her Der Skorpion trilogy (1919 - 31); or in Spain, Federico Garcia Lorca with Oda a Salvador Dali (1926) and Luis Cernuda in La realidad y el deseo (1936), creating a much-needed cultural space for LGBT concerns. With the new millennium well underway, LGBT has continued to benefit from equality and diversity legislation together with an increasing and continued social acceptance.
Hosted by the Languages, Cultures and Ideologies Research Unit at Cardiff School of European Studies, the Forbidden Fruits, Forbidden Histories conference aims to highlight continuities and change within LGBT themes and motifs across a wide range of European cultural and social practices, seeking to highlight current academic research in, and facilitate discussions on the cultural presence of LGBT in Arts and Humanities research. The conference organisers warmly welcome abstracts for twenty-minute papers. Papers may focus on, but are not restricted to, Literature, Poetry, Visual Arts, Queer Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Topics may include histories of closeting; disguise and revelation; desire and consumption; metaphors of sexuality; sexuality legislation and the arts.

| | (De)Parsing Bodies | | 15.02.2012 | | Publication | | Skepsi: the online interdisciplinary research journal | Following the recent success of The Body: Exploring Culture and Research, a postgraduate conference sponsored by the British Sociological Association and held at the University of Kent, we are calling for contributions for a future issue of Skepsi: the online interdisciplinary research journal, run by postgraduate students of the University of Kent and now in its fourth year.
In an effort to capture and expand upon this momentum, we are seeking to gather ideas, explorations, critiques and experiments that examine this interdisciplinary topic. Studying the body takes many forms. We believe in a rhizomatic approach that combines a variety of perspectives and thus welcome traditional and non-traditional approaches; include theoretical, empirical and artistic works. We therefore welcome submissions in the form of traditional articles, poetry, visual art, etc. Questions in which we are interested include: What is the body? What are bodies? What are the consequences of the body entering into political techniques? How do life sciences impact on our understanding of the body/bodies? What does the posthumanist body feel like? What is the role of embodiment in performance making and doing? How important is identity in relation to bodies? How much power do the media have in shaping relationships to bodies? How important are spatial and geographical considerations to daily experiences of the body?

| | La place de l’éthique dans les différents «moments» de la recherche empirique | | 15.02.2012 | | Publication | | Site internet de la SSE | Après avoir pris position sur la question éthique dans la recherche empirique, le Groupe de réflexion éthique et déontologique (GRED) de la Société Suisse d’Ethnologie (SSE) souhaite poursuivre la discussion et offrir aux chercheur-e-s la possibilité d’y participer par la rédaction de discussions de cas. Publiées sur le site web de la SSE ( www.seg-sse.ch), ces discussions de cas, en se basant sur des recherches effectuées par leur auteurs, ont pour but de documenter des enjeux éthiques tels qu’ils se sont concrètement posés au/ à la chercheur-e. L’auteur-e pourra ainsi exposer et justifier le type de réponses qu’il/elle y aura apporté. Loin de vouloir s’ériger en « contrôleur-e-s » ou « garant-e-s » de l’éthique et rejetant toute démarche moralisante, les membres du GRED souhaitent encourager l’échange d’expériences. Ils proposent de s’interroger, dans un but pédagogique et réflexif, sur les différents « moments » de la recherche et de leurs enjeux. Le but est ainsi de démontrer que les ethnologues tiennent compte de la dimension éthique, mais que leurs réponses en la matière varient selon les contextes (aux questions communes de l’éthique correspondent ainsi une large palette de réponses qui font écho à l’espace épistémologique particulier des sciences sociales).
Les contributions pourront être rédigées en français, allemand et anglais et devront se concentrer sur un moment particulier de la recherche,
a) l’enquête de terrain (de la préparation au retour du terrain, en passant par l’enquête à proprement dite),
b) la restitution des résultats aux différent-e-s interlocuteurs/trices,
c) l’enseignement,
d) la publication et l’archivage.
Seront privilégiées les contributions qui souligneront non seulement la spécificité de la question éthique du point de vue des chercheur-e-s face à d’autres institutions, mais surtout la façon dont chaque contexte de recherche oblige à négocier des réponses adaptées selon les différents interlocuteurs/trices.

Depuis sa fondation en 2007, l’association Eternal Tour, en tant que festival itinérant suivi d’une publication, questionne l’altérité et cherche à l’expérimenter, pour en saisir les contours, les limites et les enjeux. Ce projet réunit des chercheuses et chercheurs en sciences sociales, ainsi que des artistes et des musiciens. En Juin 2012 Eternal Tour sera à Genève et conciliera son approche cosmopolite à la thématique du féminisme pour créer le Forum International Féministe (F.I.F). Le F.I.F est organisé en collaboration avec le Programme sur Genre, Globalisation et Changements (PGGC) de l’IHEID (The Graduate Institute, Genève) et l’unité des Etudes Genres de la Faculté des Lettres de l’Université de Genève. Le F.I.F se veut polyglotte et cosmopolite, et mettra l’accent sur différentes parties du monde pour rassembler les approches et perspectives de la recherche et des approches féministes au niveau global.
Quatre axes thématiques ont été privilégiés pour structurer notre appel à contribution et amener une réflexion diversifiée: 1. Les contours d’un féminisme international, 2. Le rapport entre le féminisme et la fiction, 3. L’absence de neutralité de l’espace et sa dimension genrée et 4. Les relations entre les femmes et le droit.

The very term masculinity has hitherto been examined in such a broad range of contexts that it can sometimes appear as a pure abstract form, some kind of con¬ guration or ‘relation‘ practically devoid of any concrete, de¬ ning content. We might say the same thing about crisis, a term that seems as persistent as it is exhausted. | | What is coalition? Reflections on the conditions of alliance formation with Judith Butler’s work | | 15.02.2012 | | 15 May 2012 with Prof. Judith Butler (UC Berkeley) | | Event | | Institute for Gender Studies, Geneva University, Switzerland | In her groundbreaking book, Gender Trouble (1990), Judith Butler inaugurates and develops her critique of foundational reasoning – of identity categories such as (biological) sex, or of a transcendental subject such as “the woman” or even “women” (in the plural) – as a critique of identity politics in general, and of a women’s identity-based feminism in particular. For this reason, her antifoundationalism appears as a critical practice that seeks not only to rethink the political – along with genders, bodies, subjects and agency – in terms of performativity rather than of representation, but also, and most importantly, to theorize alternatives to identity politics in terms of coalition building. Since then, we can consider that Butler has insistently returned to the action-oriented question of “what is coalition?” and further elaborated on the conditions of possibility of alliance formation – at least, as much as on the conditions of subversion – in order to move effectively toward what she calls a “progressive” or “radical democratic politics.”
This one-day conference aims to reflect – historically, sociologically, philosophically – on the conditions of possibility, on the objects, means and purposes of alliance formation – between minorities, with the State, political parties, and other public actors, or between disciplines, or even across species (e.g. animal-human), etc. –, of political transformation, and thus of a collective agency, in both domestic and international contexts, through the concrete and generic question of “What is coalition?” – with special interest for the ways in which critical perspectives inspired from feminist and queer theory can be made into productive tools to theorize the political at various levels, at different times and locations, but also to intervene and do better democratic work. We encourage submissions from all research fields that present original material and engage, with creativity and precision, with both the theoretical and practical dimensions of the conference question with insights from – rather than directly on – Butler’s “political theory.”

La naissance, en 2011, du Regroupement québécois d’études féministes (RéQEF), interdisciplinaire, interuniversitaire et interrégional, entend améliorer la concertation des chercheures féministes québécoises. C’est dans cet esprit que l’organisation d’un colloque étudiant féministe s’est imposée comme une manière de favoriser le réseautage et le dialogue entre les étudiantes et étudiants féministes de l’ensemble du Québec, et ce à tous les niveaux d’avancement de leurs travaux. Eclairages philosophiques, éthiques et épistémologiques | | 15.02.2012 | | 28-29 juin 2012 | | Event | | Faculté du Sport de Nancy | Dans le contexte international de l’émergence de philosophies du sport comme disciplines à l’interface de l’histoire, de l’éthique et de l’épistémologie il devient important pour la communauté française d’engager une réflexion sur l’expérience corporelle dans le cadre des STAPS : quels enseignements, quelles valeurs, quelles philosophies ? Entre états généraux et comités d’éthique, quels sont les fondements philosophiques, épistémologiques, éthiques pour modéliser l’expérience corporelle ? Comment être à l’épreuve de l’expérience, comme Natalie Depraz, Francisco J. Varela, Pierre Vermersch l’ont inventé pour une pratique phénoménologique ?
La proprioception paraît nous assurer d’une connaissance en 1er personne des sensations produites par notre corps. Dans l’extéroceptivité, M. Merleau Ponty le précise, par la mise en forme des stimuli, « la conscience du corps envahit le corps ». La proprioceptivité n’est pas une connaissance qui refermerait le data sensoriel dans une catégorie définitive : « le corps se surprend lui-même de l’extérieur en train d’exercer une fonction de connaissance ». Dès lors que l’expérience du corps se dégrade « en « représentation » du corps, ce n’était pas un phénomène, c’était un fait psychique », différence déjà établi ici entre soma-esthétique représentationnelle et soma-esthétique expérientielle. L’expérience est dégradée par la représentation car en devenant ainsi contenus de conscience les sensations seraient seulement constantes, redoublés par l’esprit.
John Dewey, rappelle Richard Shusterman dans Sous l’interprétation, dans Experience and nature que « l’expérience cognitive doit prendre sa source dans une expérience de nature non cognitive » après avoir précisé que « le cerveau et le système nerveux sont primitivement des organes d’action-réaction ; biologiquement, on peut affirmer sans crainte de se tromper que l’expérience première est un type correspondant ». Pour autant, la critique de Shusterman envers Dewey et son admiration non critique pour Alexander se fonde déjà là avant d’être développée dans le dernier chapitre de Conscience du corps : Dewey y affirme « L’étude de M Alexander rend hommage à ce merveilleux instrument de notre vie, qu’il s’agisse de la vie mentale et morale ou de cette vie que, d’une façon quelque peu absurde, nous nommons corporelle. Si une attitude religieuse envers le corps se généralise, nous y gagnerons une atmosphère permettant d’assurer le contrôle conscient dont nous avons besoin ».
Liste indicative des thématiques autour de l’expérience corporelle en STAPS sur lesquelles les contributions peuvent porter :

• l’action motrice, la perception en 1ere personne,
• l’immersion sensorielle,
• la modélisation de la pratique professionnelle,
• l’écologie corporelle,
• la conscience corporelle,
• l’inconscient cérébral,
• l’attention expérientielle,
• la proprioception.
| Deux types de contributions sont attendus : Celles privilégiant une approche conceptuelle et théorique (revues de littérature, articles conceptuels, travaux empiriques qualitatifs et quantitatifs). Une sélection des meilleurs articles de recherche sera publiée dans un numéro spécial de la revue STAPS (hiver 2012). Celles mettant en perspective des expériences dans le domaine du colloque. Ils doivent concerner des situations récentes et réelles. Une sélection des meilleurs cas sera publiée en janvier 2013, dans la collection Epistémologie du corps.
L’ensemble des communications des participants sera disponible sur un support numérique remis aux participants ou accessible sur demande. Les auteurs se verront notifier par le comité d’organisation si leur contribution est retenue pour publication dans l’un des ouvrages.
Les propositions retenues par le comité scientifique feront l’objet d’une présentation de 20 minutes suivie d’échanges et de discussions avec la salle. Reprenant les caractéristiques précitées, le format définitif des papiers sera de 35 000 signes (titre, coordonnées de l’auteur, notes infrapaginales, références bibliographiques et espaces compris).

The American Pragmatist philosopher William James was in many respects ahead of his time, emphasizing attention to the situated and bodily character of knowledge and value before the advent of standpoint theory, as well as the concrete consequences of philosophizing in a way that pre-figures recent feminist efforts to investigate the troubling collective habits that academic philosophy has helped to perpetuate. Although James’ own status as a feminist is dubious, his work, many have argued, is ripe with resources for contemporary feminist epistemology, ethics, phenomenology and philosophy of psychology.
We seek scholars interested in contributing to a panel discussion on feminist readings of James to be held at the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy meeting in the spring of 2013, and ultimately, to the anticipated edited volume, Feminist Interpretations of William James (to be submitted to Penn State Press’ “Re-Reading the Canon” series, ed. Nancy Tuana). Any and all feminist approaches to and/or criticisms of James are welcome.

Geographical research on age has traditionally been divided into separate bodies of literature on the young and old. However, there has been growing recognition in recent years of the value of an intergenerational approach—an approach that seeks to explore the nature of generational divisions while also recognising the significant and complex ways in which members of different generations are (and can be) involved in each other’s lives. How does space facilitate and limit intergenerational contact and the nature of intergenerational relationships, both within and beyond families? How do the geographies of intergenerational relationships vary between social groups and contexts? And if generational separation and segregation are in fact problems—as a significant body of research and commentary attests—how can this be ameliorated? Social scientists have provided some partial answers to these questions, yet more research is urgently needed if we are to achieve the vision of a ‘society for all ages’ championed, in different forms, by the United Nations, European Commission, and national and local governments.
This one day event is designed to explore advances and new developments in research on the geographies of intergenerational relationships (including both familial and extra-familial relationships). The event will include keynote panels and a series of paper sessions. Abstracts are invited on themes including (but not limited to):
- Migration and intergenerational relations
- Spaces of intergenerational encounter
- Generational identities during times of economic crisis
- Patterns and processes of age segregation/integration
- Gender, sexuality, and intergenerational relationships
- The intergenerational transmission, negotiation, and contestation of values, beliefs, faiths, and practices
- Intergenerational justice
- Strategies and methodologies for researching intergenerationality
The main conference will take place on Friday, 11 May 2012 at the University of Leeds. The conference will be preceded by a keynote panel discussion and wine reception starting at 6 PM on Thursday, 10 May 2012.

| | Porno-graphics and porno-tactics: desire, affect and representation in pornography | | 28.02.2012 | | Publication | | re-public | Pornography’s inscriptions in representation have troubled feminist writers, who since the 1970s have been critically addressing issues related to the presentation of the female body. Porn, it was contended, is for the most part a heterosexist genre, and its market circulation serves male libidinal pleasure, fixing the position of pleasure for both wo/men and abiding by patriarchal, gendered and sexually imposed norms. Later, the term was reclaimed under a critical re-perception of porn, cast as a gaze upon different others. This time race, religion, class came to the forefront. From Rosi Braidotti (m.s.) who addresses issues of racism in islamophobic representations such as the documentary ‘Fitna’, to the many commentators who related pornography to acts of torture, most notably in Abu-Ghraib (McClintock 2009) – pornography becomes a ‘concept metaphor’ that haunts autonomy (the laws of the self) through an heteronomous (laws of the other) affect (cf. Nancy 2007). Similarly, in debates over forced sex-work, the voyeuristic humanitarian gaze produces its Others either by sexualizing the other’s body, or by desexualizing the human in it.
On the other hand, many newly emerging artworks, documentaries, and porn productions, attempt to exscribe from porn its initial, normatively repressed qualities, and re-inscribe a feminist or queer perception of enjoyment and pleasure through feminine jouissance and the possibilities to push the limits of representation. In such tactics (de Certeau 1984), porn does not only become a concept-metaphor but, rather, it is being worked through a radical metonymic approach which seeks to transgress norms, explore desires and open up to affects. Tactics thus become tactile.
The promise of the politics of performativity that one can read when a term is reclaimed so as to re-produce it in difference, however, always defines the premise of possible misfire (Butler 1997). We propose to reflect on pornography from the point of view both of the ‘politics of representation’ which it may apply, subvert, reproduce and perform, and also of its ‘affective and libidinal’ dimension. We do not claim the euphoric potentiality of pornography as necessarily subversive, but we open to the possibilities of re-writing (in textual, contextual, intertextual) on/about it through different graphic and tactical/tactile inscriptions.
Therefore, on the one hand we ask contributors to reflect on definitions and practices of pornography as a genre adopting specific codes and canons, whether it is concerned with sex acts or with other subjects of representation. Can the term ‘pornography’ be used un-troubled, or without questioning its initial inscription as a per se normative vision in representation and other forms of (emdodied, inter/subjective) desire? How easy is it to reclaim it as a term? What would this entail? To what extent are discursive forms efficacious in shaping subjectivities, and how we might understand their failures and excesses? What might pornographic representations conceal?
Thus, we are brought to the second aspect of pornography as experience, in its affective, libidinal, inter/subjective dimensions. How does the affective intersect with the symbolic? Where, if at all, lies the potential for pornographic experience/representation to subvert existing mechanisms of subjection? And what kind of economic, (bio)political deployments do representations and affects intersect with?
| We solicit contributions from academics, artists, activists and practitioners (in whatever combination). Articles (in English, Greek, French, Spanish, Italian) should not exceed 1500-2000 words in length.

The aesthetic and style of Japanese BL have also been assumed, deployed and transformed by female fans transnationally. Est-il naturel d’être soi-même sur la scène judiciaire ? La question peut sans doute surprendre. Pourtant, la pratique des archives judicaires fait émerger des configurations rhétoriques, des discours attendus et des attitudes motivées par la situation d’urgence dans laquelle la crainte du bras vengeur de la justice place le prévenu, le témoin, le plaignant devant l’opinion, plus souvent appelée le « bruit public » sous l’Ancien Régime. La pratique régulière de la justice, les confrontations aux différents récits qui s’échappent des tribunaux, des témoins bavards et des jurés peu scrupuleux, rendent compte d’une profonde familiarité des justiciables du monde de la justice, lesquels témoignent tous d’une fine connaissance des usages du discours judiciaire et des réponses qui peuvent être attendus en justice, réponses censées accabler, atténuer ou disculper l’auteur de l’acte réalisé auprès des juges chargés de l’enquête. Ainsi, selon le délit commis et, parfois, le sexe, se distingue une instrumentalisation des discours et des représentations des individus confrontés au crime, à la morale, aux convenances et à l’État. Parler de scène judiciaire suppose que le justiciable se produit et se donne en spectacle, selon une ritualisation de soi, à la fois dans son rapport à autrui et aux normes, le plus souvent tacites, régissant la société. Il apparaît, par exemple dans les affaires d’infanticides, que des similitudes rhétoriques sont dévoilées par de tels récits mortifères formulés en justice. Les infanticides ainsi élucidés mettent l’accent sur la mort de l’enfant, dès l’accouchement, ou soulignent alors l’inexpérience de la femme, incapable de comprendre son état de grossesse. L’intérêt est de considérer, dans chacune des articulations du procès, la capacité à relier la cause dénoncée avec la société, la justice et la politique : aucun procès ne peut être envisagé dans sa seule logique interne, quoique celle-ci soit essentielle à la compréhension et à la dynamique de l’instruction de l’affaire ; il tend aussi à s’intégrer dans un discours qui est celui de la politique, urbaine ou souveraine, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.
L’ouvrage propose 5 axes de réflexions :
Axe 1.- Le genre et la justice. L’étude des archives judiciaires d’Europe sous l’Ancien Régime semble mettre en lumière que, selon les crimes et la circonstance de leur réalisation, les hommes et les femmes sont amenés à développer des stratégies rhétoriques et des procédés discursifs spécifiques, des postures et des récits propres à leur sexe. Mais existe-t-il un discours qui traduirait un dimorphisme sexuel ? Quelles sont les différences et les spécificités éventuelles en termes de représentations et de réalité sociale décrite par les hommes et les femmes du Moyen Âge à nos jours ? Quels sont les arguments mis en lumière par les hommes et les femmes, et quelles sont les réalités – leur vérité – traduites par le mot en justice ?
Axe 2.- Trouble de soi et émotion en justice. À travers le discours du plaignant, de la victime, du prévenu, du témoin, il est intéressant de rendre perceptible l’émotion ressentie par chaque protagoniste du procès, du discours de soi, de la souffrance subie par l’acte violent, qu’il ait été verbal, physique ou symbolique, à celle de devoir tout livrer en justice, au nom de la vérité, et de s’exposer à d’éventuels actes de représailles, les faits déposés entrant, tôt ou tard, dans la sphère du public. Le mot révèle ainsi des enjeux qui sont ceux de l’individu, de la parenté et du groupe auquel il appartient.
Axe 3.- Le mensonge judiciaire : formes et permanences. Les justiciables connaissent les rouages de la machine judiciaire, même de façon sommaire, et n’hésitent pas à utiliser, sans doute grâce aux conseils d’amis et d’avocats, les possibilités offertes par la loi et le droit, afin d’éviter la sanction d’une peine, de ne pas conforter un savoir juridique et de mettre en doute, sur la base de pratiques culturelles et politiques, la vérité qui tend à émerger du discours des plaignants et des déposants. Quelles sont ainsi les usages des différents acteurs du procès ? Quels sont les outils qui leur permettent d’être entendus et de ne pas voir invalidées leurs affirmations en justice ? Quelle est la part jouée par les avocats ? Quels sont les rites judiciaires qui permettent à chacune des parties du procès de faire face à l’instruction d’une affaire et aux technicismes utilisés par les experts de la justice ? Quels liens peuvent être dégagés entre le procès et la sphère politique ?
Axe 4.- De la comédie à la tragédie, la mise en scène judiciaire. Les discours prononcés devant le juge rendent également compte de pratiques littéraires, qui reposent parfois, explicitement, sur des récits anciens ou sur d’autres récents que les contemporains, qu’ils soient ou non appelés à jouer un quelconque rôle dans le procès, comprennent. Cette forme de dialogue, qui peut se décliner sur des registres différenciés allant de la comédie au drame et à la tragédie, autorise les acteurs de la justice – en l’occurrence les parties impliquées, soutenues par leurs avocats – à jouer sur la rhétorique destinée à infléchir le procès dans un sens qui soit favorable à l’une ou l’autre des parties. Quelle est, ainsi, la mise en scène judiciaire conçue par les plaignants, les avocats et les prévenus ? Quel est le rôle joué par l’opinion publique, qui est aussi appelée à se prononcer, ainsi que celui de la littérature grise, de l’échafaud, du roman noir sur le procès et son histoire du Moyen Âge à nos jours ?
Axe 5.- La culture judiciaire à l’épreuve du discours des experts. Le procès est l’expression d’une culture à la fois juridique et culturelle, et rend manifestes les pratiques sociales d’une communauté à une époque donnée. À ces discours s’ajoutent ceux livrés par les experts, des légistes et des médecins, sur le corps, qu’il ait été blessé, meurtri, torturé. Aussi la science des experts contribue-t-elle à donner à lire différemment le procès et l’enrichit d’une perception nouvelle, censée conforter l’intime conviction du juge qui est tenu de prononcer la sentence. L’intérêt est ainsi prêté à saisir une vérité multiple qui repose, d’abord, sur l’expert de la justice, puis sur le médecin : une confrontation de discours, allant de la culture savante, littéraire, culturelle, juridique et scientifique qui contribue à exprimer des sensibilités collectives, et à rendre compte de la perception du corps, celui qui a été blessé ou qui est mort.

There are a few IMPORTANT things to know about organizing panels for SSHA:
- Panels of research papers must have 4 (or more) papers.
- Panels must include presenters from more than one academic discipline and institution.
- Panels that are complete (4 papers, discussant, chair) have a much higher chance of getting accepted.
- Panels organized in different formats than the standard presentation of 4 research papers are encouraged. Roundtable discussions and book sessions ("author meets critics") have been well attended at recent conferences.
- Panel organizers will need to provide an abstract, title and contact information for each panel participant, and designate a network (or networks) where the panel/individual paper is likely to fit. - Graduate students may apply for a SSHA travel grant (http://www.ssha.org/grants). Other than that, there is no expense coverage for SSHA participation.

| | Women and Reform in the Middle East and North Africa | | 01.03.2012 | | Spring 2012 issue | | Publication | | Sharqiyya | Sharqiyya is a peer-reviewed academic journal published semi-annually by the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University and the Middle East & Islamic Studies Association of Israel. It publishes scholarly articles about the recent history and politics of the Middle East and North Africa and seeks to promote and disseminate the work of scholars with firsthand knowledge of the region’s cultures and languages. Each issue of Sharqiyya includes six articles, several of which will address a theme inspired by contemporary events in the Middle East and North Africa.
The editors of Sharqiyya welcome article submissions from academics and graduate students of all disciplines for the Spring 2012 issue. Articles addressing next issue’s focus feature on “Women and Reform in the Middle East and North Africa” are encouraged, as well as articles on any topic of interest relating to the region.
| Articles should be written in English and include no more than 3,000 words. At this time the editors welcome submissions of both completed articles and of article abstracts. Abstracts should outline a proposed article and should be no more than 500 words.

The volume will consist of multi-disciplinary, historical and comparative reflections on the body in a global world. The submission deadline for proposals is March 10, 2012.
The editor invites scholars to think of the various ideals and practices associated with the body, and about how these have developed and changed in a world characterized by a fast-paced flow of ideas, products, and people. Topics may include (but are certainly not limited to):
- Tattooing
- henna
- body piercing, body carving
- body hair removal
- cosmetic surgery (including "ethnic surgery")
- hair straightening
- skin lightening/ bleaching
- working out
- the global beauty industry and the marketing of "Western" ideals
- beauty pageants, "international standards" of beauty
- body-image disorders
Since the volume is focused on the globalized and globalizing nature of body practices and ideals, proposed works should consider how these practices and ideals have travelled from their place of origin to where they are practiced now; and how specific practices and ideals regarding the body are changing, or resisting change, in a particular society through the process and rhetoric of globalization and/or nationalism.
| The editor invites chapter proposals of original work of up to 500 words. The submission deadline for proposals is March 10, 2012.
The volume will comprise two kinds of essays: original scholarly essays (between 6,000-9,000 words), and shorter original personal reflection pieces (under 2,500 words). Once a proposal has been conditionally accepted, a first draft of the entire chapter will need to be submitted by July 15, 2012.

L’objectif est de réfléchir sur les interactions possibles entre l’histoire du genre et l’histoire de l’environnement en multipliant les sujets, les zones géographiques et les contextes historiques, afin de présenter en détail l’état de la recherche dans ce domaine et ses possibles développements.
Nous sollicitons tout spécialement des textes traitant les sujets suivants:
- Représentations de l’environnement par le recours à des métaphores et des symboles “de genre” en différents domaines du discours: par exemple dans le mécanicisme philosophique, l’évolutionnisme, l’économie politique, le nationalisme, la propagande coloniale, les mouvements environnementaux, etc.

- L’environnement et le corps sexué: par ex. l’impact du risque environnemental/industriel sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive; les formes différentes de connaissance/ expérience/ évaluation du risque environnemental; les transformations du travail et des relations familiales et communautaires en fonction des transformations environnementales (par ex. l’impact des pesticides sur les travailleurs/travailleuses agricoles, ou de l’amiante sur la santé des ouvriers/ouvrières, leurs familles et les communautés).
- Le développement d’une conscience environnementale et des mouvements de protection de la nature et de la santé dans des territoires soit urbains, soit extra-urbains; par ex. spécificités et différences dans les approches culturelles comme dans les pratiques militantes féminines/masculines; préjugés et stigmatisations de genre dans le discours anti-environnemental, etc.
Les auteur/es pourront choisir soit la dimension collective soit la dimension individuelle de la subjectivité écologique.

submissions for an edited volume entitled, Trans Studies: Beyond
Hetero/Homo Normativities, which we anticipate publishing at a
university press.
Currently at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary scholarship, Trans Studies have undermined pre-existing, oppositional sex/gender binaries by focusing on the fluidity and malleability of gender identity and expression. Trans Studies therefore destabilize and complicate many of the debates about the social, biological and cultural constructions of gender and sexuality. There has also been a heated debate among scholars and activists—especially in the United States and Latin America—on the distinctions between transgender, transsexual and transvestite, and the ways in which each one of these terms interrogates scientific, artistic, popular, cultural and ethnic definitions of gender and sexuality based on the idea of a set spectrum, or conceived as a result of a particular performance or practice. Scholars and activists who work on trans issues are currently analyzing the social, psychological, and legal impact of surgical gender reassignment, as well as promoting the protection of legal rights for trans people in public spaces. The proposed edited volume would like to address this topic as an exploration of the new frontiers that are open when the relationships between gender, sexuality and the body are not conceived within heteronormative or homonormative frameworks, but from the perspective of psychoanalysis and desire, philosophy and subject theory, law and civil rights, cultural and social studies and issues of representation, and sociological and political science debates on social imaginaries and political radicalism.
This volume will encourage a broad conversation about the most recent redefinitions in Women’s, Queer and Sexuality Studies in dialogue with debates in Trans Studies. Possible topics might explore:
- The relationship between identity, desire and the body
- The relationship between feminist theory, queer theory and trans theory; the ways in which Trans Studies have transformed Feminist and Queer Studies
- The performativity of gender and sexuality
- The history of gender as social and scientific construct
- The relationship between LGB and T in movement politics, nationally and internationally
- The relationship between trans studies and transnational studies; migration, queer and trans rights; trans tourism
- The possibility of translating trans identities beyond territorial borders
- Queer linguistics; the challenge of capturing fluid conceptions of gender identity and expression in language; of terminology and its associated politics (e.g. transgender, transgendered or trans; intersex or DSD); of exporting/transposing nomenclature between different national contexts
- HIV infection and trans people
- The most pressing medical/social/legal/public policy issues affecting trans people
- The role of intersectional oppression (e.g. race, ethnicity, class, sexuality) in the field of Trans Studies
- Sexual rights as human rights, especially rights related to gender identity and gender expression

Fashion is an economic and social force, a culture industry, a global powerhouse, a political statement. Fashion can simultaneously express freedom and constriction, be both democratic and totalitarian; both repress and liberate the body and gender roles. Transformation and affect are at its heart. Fashion is a universal form of human expression that transgresses boundaries of gender/race/class/embodiment/culture/nation. Fashion ignites passions, produces colossal waste, demands ruthless exclusion, inspires hysterical devotion. Bubbling up and filtering down, fashion mixes high and low, sultry and strong, ancient ritual and cutting edge technology.
A thorough study of the history of fashion in its symbolic, creative and coercive faces shows how it has been crucial in the construction of national identities in fascist regimes or in processes of decolonization, such as in India, or in the remapping of the world economy, including China, India and Brazil. Fashion is closely tied to industrial, technological and economic developments and is at the center of cultural activity and change. In today’s globalized world, the fashion and textile industry are key factors to understand the profound transformations occurring in cities, nations and regions the world over.
Underlining all the recent scholarly attention that has been given to fashion is the intent of stripping it of its apparent light and frivolous reputation, and replacing it with a serious scholarly investigation that seeks to uncover the many complex layers that its surface conceals. The study of fashion, costume and dress has involved a series of disciplines, and has expanded their boundaries.
Is fashion a women’s issue? Inherently gendered, based on female bodily display, taking fashion seriously demands exploring the limits of gender and embodiment. Pushing that envelope reveals how fashion can question pre-established notions of gender, aesthetics and behavior. How do we understand masculinity in relation to dress and fashion? We invite exploration of fashion, clothing and adornment through plays of androgyny, from dandyism to lesbian chic. Seeing through clothes to the politics of power they materialize draws fashion into debates concerning identity, selfhood, sustainability, subjectivity, representation, and virtuality. How does the fashioned body trouble the boundaries between lived and represented, driving toward new phenomenological conceptions? How do the globe spanning trends of fashion reshape experiences of self and locale, and bring new relations of time and space? How has fashion in the blogosphere affected technologies of self, and produced new relations between bodies and city-scapes all over the world? How does fashion mediate the body? How do these mediations feed through text, film, the Internet and beyond?
Always in flux, never static, fashion’s fast pace often defies and disrupts the discipline-bound analytics of traditional scholarship. In this special issue of WSQ we seek scholarship that pushes the boundaries between dyadic conceptions of art and commerce, technology and the body, nature and culture, aesthetics and politics, reality and representation.
We invite a rethinking of the traditional organization of disciplines within the social sciences and the humanities to include the impact of fashion within their contexts and welcome academic papers from a wide range of approaches, including theory, empirical research, literature, art, history, design, media and film studies, cultural studies, performance studies, women’s and gender studies, psychology, sociology, semiotics, and anthropology, as well as creative prose, poetry, artwork, memoir and biography. Feminist mothering creates unique challenges. Mothers may struggle with shifts in their own subjectivity and the peculiar conjoinment of parenthood. As women experience the unique powerlessness of motherhood, they also hold the uncomfortable power of acting as agents of socialization and social control over their children. While this power is evident in many areas of parenting, it is especially keenly experienced in the area of gender and mothering.
Feminist mothers may attempt to resist gender binaries; they may submit to them while attempting to foster critical dialogue; they may struggle with the display of their own femininity or, for some, its perceived lack. For some parents a dialogue about gender normativity may be inspired by gender-diverse behavior on the part of their own children, while others may parent children who happily submit to the mainstream and query the need for gender questioning. Chasing Rainbows: Exploring Gender Fluid Mothering Practices attempts to cast a lens on the messy and convoluted ways that feminist parents approach parenting their children in gender aware and gender fluid ways. The collection aims to draw together scholars, activists and community members to open a conversation about the challenges of exploring and maintaining an awareness of gender while parenting in a highly gender normative world. Because gender is expressed and performed differently in various places and spaces, and across different ages, this collection welcomes submissions from feminist parents and from the widest range of experiences.
Suggested topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Cross-cultural, historical, transnational, comparative and interdisciplinary modes of inquiry and analysis
- Gender fluid parenting within and beyond cisgendered mother and father parenting roles

This project calls for the consideration of gender in relation to various kinds of love (with regard, for example, to self, spirit, religion, family, friendship, ethics, nation, globalisation, environment, and so on). How do the interactions of gender and love promote particular performances of gender; conceptions of individual and collective identity; formations of community; notions of the human; understandings of good and evil? These are just some of the questions that occupy this project.

For 2012, the Gender and Love project will meet alongside our project on Skins and Contemporary Culture. It is our intention to create cross-over sessions between the two groups ? and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between gender and love and Skins and contemporary culture. The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. Papers will also be considered on any related theme.
The conference is part of the 'At the Interface' series of research projects run by ID.Net. It aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore various discussions which are innovative and challenging. All papers accepted for and presented at this conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected papers may be invited to go forward for development into 20-25 page chapters for publication in a themed dialogic ISBN hard copy volume.

Accès des femmes et des homosexuels à l’autorité religieuse, célébrations religieuses des couples de même sexe : les conflits sur le genre et la sexualité n’ont pas seulement remplacé les conflits religieux comme le suggérait Gayle Rubin, mais ils occupent aussi aujourd’hui une place considérable dans les conflits entre univers séculiers et religieux, ou dans les controverses intra-religieuses. De nombreux travaux sur genre, sexualité et religion se sont intéressés avant tout aux discours, que ce soit en analysant les controverses doctrinaires au sein des organisations religieuses, ou en analysant les dimensions genrées des croyances et appartenances religieuses individuelles à partir d’entretiens. Ce numéro de Genre, sexualité & société propose de partir de l’angle des pratiques (Bell, 1997), en explorant comment une activité spécifiquement religieuse, le rituel, contribue à faire ou défaire les normes régulant genre et sexualité.
Dans cette perspective, les contributions, basées sur la discussion de matériaux empiriques, pourront s’inscrire dans les différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales. Les paragraphes suivants proposent des pistes d’enquête non limitatives.
Comment les rituels religieux contribuent-t-ils à assigner une identité sexuelle ou sexuée ? Dans certains groupes, le sexe d’un enfant est sanctionné socialement par une activité rituelle – circoncision, divination chamanique... Plus largement, l’activité rituelle est souvent une activité de catégorisation, d’identification, le sexe social d’une personne ou sa sexualité (virginité, hétérosexualité, homosexualité) pouvant lui fermer l’accès au rituel, que ce soit comme participant-e ou comme officiant-e, ou déterminer sa place dans le rituel. Les rites de passage (naissance, puberté ou majorité, mariage, funérailles, mais aussi conversions et accès à l’autorité religieuse), les fêtes religieuses (pèlerinages, sacrifices), mais aussi les offices religieux plus « ordinaires », peuvent ainsi produire des catégories pratiques de genre et de sexualité, par exemple lorsque les femmes et les hommes y sont séparés, ou lorsque l’abstinence est exigée des officiant-e-s. Les propositions pourront ainsi documenter empiriquement cette catégorisation rituelle du genre et de la sexualité.
Pourquoi, comment, genre et sexualité deviennent-ils parfois enjeux de débats entre experts rituels ou religieux ? Ces normes et frontières sont en effet rarement fixes. Si les autorités religieuses décrivent parfois le genre et la sexualité comme naturels, ou les politiques religieuses en ce domaine comme intemporelles, les pratiques religieuses ont au contraire contribué à la construction historique et sociale du genre et de la sexualité. Les contributions pourront ainsi explorer les configurations religieuses où ces normes et catégories ne sont pas fixées, changent, ou deviennent explicites. Le rituel est ainsi une entrée dans l’analyse de la conflictualité religieuse sur la sexualité et sur le genre, que ce soit à l’échelle locale ou à l’échelle de mouvements religieux transnationaux – accès des petites filles à la fonction d’enfant de chœur dans les paroisses catholiques, célébration religieuse des naissances dans les familles homoparentales, participation des femmes ou des homosexuels au rituel – comme participant-e-s ou comme officiant-e-s. À quelles configurations historiques, religieuses, politiques ou ethniques peut-on rattacher cette conflictualité ? Les contributions pourront ainsi analyser de telles controverses en prêtant attention à la manière dont elles questionnent les pratiques rituelles quotidiennes et leur association avec des normes de genre et de sexualité particulières.
Comment les rituels participent-ils à la reproduction, ou à la subversion, des normes dominantes concernant le genre et la sexualité ? Au-delà des catégories définies par les autorités religieuses, le rituel a des effets socialisateurs. Le langage et les codes des rituels (spatialisation, couleurs, vêtements, objets rituels, références aux substances corporelles telles que lait ou sang) véhiculent souvent des oppositions binaires entre masculin et féminin, des métaphores de la reproduction hétérosexuelle, ou une dévalorisation de la sexualité non régulée religieusement (thématique de la pureté ou de la purification). Les travaux sur les rites d’initiation ont montré comment ces derniers contribuent à la construction sociale de la masculinité et de la féminité, souvent dans des groupes sociaux où la sphère religieuse est peu différenciée des activités sociales. Les rituels religieux, en particulier les célébrations dirigées vers les jeunes adultes, produisent aussi, consciemment ou non, de l’endogamie religieuse ou ethnique.
Les contributions pourront ainsi s’intéresser à la manière dont les rituels religieux contribuent à la socialisation de genre, et à l’encadrement du désir et de la sexualité dans les sociétés sécularisées contemporaines, en contradiction ou non avec les normes de genre dominantes. (L’hyperféminité performée dans les cérémonies de mariage correspond rarement à la féminité quotidienne : comment analyser alors l’effet socialisateur du rituel – répression, ou mascarade ironique ?) Les contributions pourront aussi s’intéresser aux cas où le rituel est utilisé stratégiquement par des actrices et acteurs afin de guérir et réparer exclusion ou déviance par rapport aux normes d’un groupe donné (rites de guérison, cultes de possession).
Comment décrire et analyser la variété des appropriations individuelles et collectives des rituels religieux ? Le degré auquel les participant-e-s à un rituel en incorporent ou non les significations attribuées par les autorités religieuses (ou par les anthropologues) est en même temps très variable, de même que leur degré d’investissement émotionnel et de réflexivité face au rituel. Les contributions pourront ainsi explorer la diversité des appropriations individuelles d’un même rituel – les « déviants » au regard des normes sexuelles de leur groupe religieux ont-ils par exemple nécessairement une participation plus critique, ou la réflexivité à l’égard du rituel est-elle aussi fonction d’autres variables, comme les compétences religieuses acquises ? Les contributions pourront aussi s’intéresser aux contestations et réappropriations collectives des rituels religieux visant à déplacer les normes de genre et de sexualité – critiques féministes du langage rituel, innovations rituelles (ex. rituels de coming-out) – que ce soit à l’intérieur ou en marge des institutions religieuses. Les contributions pourront enfin s’interroger sur la manière dont les rituels religieux peuvent produire du « non-genre » (Delphy, 1991), lorsqu’ils rendent possible pour les participant-e-s d’endosser plusieurs identités sexuées (cas des cultes de possession), ou lorsqu’ils mettent l’accent sur la production d’une identité religieuse supposée transcender toutes les autres identités.

En sociologie, comme pour l’ensemble des sciences humaines d’ailleurs, la thématique de la jeunesse soulève de nombreuses questions. En premier lieu, c’est bien le problème de la confrontation entre une catégorie à première vue biologique et l’analyse sociale qui est posé. Lorsque Pierre Bourdieu a écrit cette phrase restée célèbre : « la jeunesse n’est qu’un mot » (1980), il mettait ainsi en exergue cette difficulté, nous invitant à considérer le terme de jeunesse avant tout comme l’enjeu d’une lutte de catégorisation plutôt que comme une réalité proprement observable. La sociologie de la jeunesse est-elle a priori caduque ? Est-il possible pour le chercheur de parler des jeunes et de la jeunesse sans tomber dans le piège de la biologisation, renvoyant dès lors la jeunesse à sa prétendue irresponsabilité ? Le fait que la jeunesse soit avant tout caractérisée comme une période transitoire, entre l’enfance et l’âge adulte, nous amène également à nous interroger sur la possibilité d’une étude scientifique. Quel statut peut-on accorder aux différentes problématiques concernant la jeunesse si l’on considère celles-ci comme passagères ? En définitive, parler de jeunesse a-t-il un sens pour les sciences sociales ? L’ambition de ce premier numéro de la revue Printemps des sciences sociales est de réunir un ensemble de recherches portant sur ce thème de la jeunesse afin d’en dégager les différentes spécificités. L’objectif affiché est donc de discuter cette notion pour elle-même, mais aussi de la faire interagir avec d’autres formes de catégorisation comme l’origine, les classes sociales ou encore le genre. Il s’agit par conséquent d’étudier les jeunes en tant que tels mais aussi les différentes représentations de la jeunesse, que l’on parle de représentations sociales en général ou de celles du chercheur en sciences humaines. De fait, la revue Printemps des sciences sociales s’adresse aux jeunes chercheurs, doctorants ou étudiants en master, et par conséquent, un intérêt particulier est porté sur les particularités éventuelles d’études concernant les jeunes et la jeunesse réalisées par de jeunes chercheurs.

Ignited by the Arab Spring, uprisings in Greece and Spain, and protests in Wisconsin, Occupy Wall Street has brought corporate greed and structural inequality into the spotlight while claiming public space and refusing hierarchical models of resistance. "We are the 99%," the central slogan of the Occupy movement, has been crucial in rallying mass support. And yet, this slogan invokes a vision of sameness that stands in stark contrast to a queer analysis that foregrounds, cultivates, and nurtures difference. From Mortville, the queer camp at Occupy Baltimore, to the Feminists and Queers Against Capitalism bloc at the Oakland general strike, queers are playing central roles in Occupy spaces. But, what would it mean to bring a queer analysis to the forefront, going beyond the politics of inclusion to question the very terms of the debate?
For the first time in decades, perhaps there's a possibility for a mass movement demanding radical social change in the US. Still, most Occupy spaces remain straight, white, and male-dominated: how do we prevent the power imbalances intrinsic to previous movements? What about accountability within the 99%? How have Occupy spaces addressed (and failed to address) homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, racism, ableism, imperialism/patriotism, police brutality, anti-homeless territorialism, sexual assault, and other issues of structural, personal, and intimate violence? As struggles emerge to confront the colonial rhetoric of “occupying” indigenous land (and to address this history), what can a queer analysis bring to this challenge? What do queer struggles have to learn from Occupy/Decolonize movements, and what can Occupy/Decolonize movements learn from queer struggles?
I'm interested in missives from queers involved in Occupy/Decolonize movements, as well as from those veering between skeptical and inspired. I would love to hear about queer challenges within Occupy encampments large and small, across the country and around the world. Bring me your explosive analysis, your rants, your manifestoes, your journal entries, your rage and rigor and hope and heartbreak. In addition to written nonfiction work, I'm also interested in art, photography, posters, flyers, and other forms of visual documentation queering the Occupy movement – its goals and aspirations, its impact, its perils and possibilities.

Sept. 2012 | | International Conference | | University of Vienna | The aim of the conference “NeuroCultures – NeuroGenderings II” is to improve reflective scientific approaches concerned with sex/gender and the brain, and to gain particular insight into the transformation or persistence of gendered norms and values that accompany the mutual entanglements between brain research, various disciplines and public discourse. With the expansion of the domains of neuroscientific knowledge, today we are witnessing an abundance of emerging neurocultures (such as neuropedagogy, neuroeconomics, neuromarketing, neurotheology, neuroaesthetics, among others) in which bio-socio-cultural relations are (re-) negotiated within research, neuro-(technological)applications, and public discourses. We use the notion of the “cerebral subject” – the cultural figure of the human according to which all we need to be ourselves is our brains (Ortega & Vidal 2007) – to describe how thought, behaviour, subjectivity and identity are collapsed with the brain’s biology in these neurocultural fields. The cerebral subject is a specific kind of subject; the brain vocabulary produces a culturally and historically specific version of the human and, as such, impacts individual, social, cultural and political spheres.
Gender aspects have to be seriously taken into account within these endeavours on various levels: their empirical significance, the close entanglement of neuroscientific research with society, the impacts of neurofacts and neurotechnologies (in the broadest sense) on socio-cultural gender symbolisms and gendered power relations. | | Dissident Friendships: Imperialism, Feminism and the Possibility of Transnational Solidarities | | 30.03.2012 | | Publication | This volume examines the role of friendship between women as a resource for transnational collaborations, and the often conflictual contexts in which they emerge. We take our cue from literary scholar Leela Gandhi, (Affective Communities: Anticolonial Thought, Fin-de-Siecle Radicalism, and the Politics of Friendship. Durham: Duke University Press, 2006), who describes friendship as a collaboration between the “most unlikely of associates” within a 19th century colonial context. Minor yet significant, these relationships offer an alternative reading of the colonial encounter. Similarly, we argue that in the current neocolonial imperial context, where global divides are at once intractable yet more diffuse, the idea of dissident cross-cultural friendship might provide a transformative vision of transnational solidarity and praxis. In other words, this work is guided by the question, do unlikely alliances among associates of oppressor and oppressed communities--trump, or are trumped by, other kinds of allegiances individuals might have, to family, community, or nation, in the pursuit of social justice.
For instance, in the last decade as the U.S. nation has waged a global war, women’s writings – memoirs, travel writings, fiction – and films have burgeoned on the topic of friendship with the Other (Kabul Beauty School, A Cup of Friendship, Lipstick in Afghanistan, Beyond Belief to name just a few). Even as these narratives emphasize friendship as a vehicle for healing, and peace-building among women of nations at war, these relationships are forged within the larger context of a long history of western and feminist imperialism, militarism and domination of the Other. Do these friendships dismantle western imperialism, or contribute to new entrenchments of it? In this context, we are interested to discover examples of Maria Lugones’ (“Sisterhood and Friendship as Feminist Models.” Feminism and Community, Eds. Penny E. Weiss, and Marilyn Friedman. Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1995. 135-146 ) observations about bonding among women across differences where there is a possibility for pluralist friendships that are mutually, meaningful, empathetic, and transformative.
What kinds of solidarities – oppositional, dissident, or complicit – can we envision at the intersections of the contradictory practices of militarism, humanism, neoliberalism, and peace-building initiatives, which seem to implicate women as their primary agents? Jacqui Alexander (Pedagogies of Crossing: Meditations on Feminisms, Sexual Politics, Memory, and the Sacred. Durham: Duke University Press, 2005) has argued that as human beings we share a profound and sacred connection with one another, which can only be realized through deep reflection and self-conscious practice. How do we imagine and strive for such connection and consciousness even as we are fractured by identity and geopolitics? Are alliances across differences inevitably crushed within dominant patriarchal colonial relations? Or do they cause a change in self-and-other-perception to contribute to social and political transformation? Can friendship be revisioned as the basis of solidarity because it is premised on an emotional connection; and in what ways do emotions reveal the subtle workings of power, as Uma Narayan (“Working Together Across Difference: Some Considerations on Emotions and Political Practice.” Hypatia 3.2 (Summer 1988):133-140) suggests?
We invite a range of submissions that reflect a transnational feminist methodology, including work that is interdisciplinary, ethnographic, literary, filmic, personal, narrative, fictional, creative non-fiction, poetry and research essays.

Comment une personne handicapée célibataire peut-elle déjà commencer à faire des rencontres ?
Le handicap n'est pas uniquement un fait biologique. L'organisation des institutions, l'accessibilité de l'architecture, de l'espace public tout comme grand nombre de représentations sociales contribuent partout à exclure et laisser les personnes handicapés dans l'oubli. La question de la sexualité des personnes handicapées est souvent abandonnée au corps médical --- ou abandonnée tout court. Le corps handi semble un « corps à aider », un corps qu'on réduit souvent à quelque chose qui doit être lavé, soigné, entretenu et réparé, un corps asexuel et asexué, réduit aux obligations médicales, à la dépendance qui l'entoure, le borde et le définit. Peut-on penser des personnes dans ces corps ?
L'accès à la sexualité dans les structures d'accueil et d'hébergement est loin d'être un acquis, autant pour des raisons de règlement, par exemple l'interdiction de recevoir des personnes dans sa chambre, ou uniquement « du même sexe » (sic…), ou simplement pragmatico-économiques : un lit médicalisé coûte cher, un lit double encore plus… Le milieu associatif handicapé [est] toujours fermé aux problématiques d’orientation sexuelle, et face à cela, en raison d’un culte de la beauté physique et d'un corps normé, mais aussi du fait de la non accessibilité des lieux sociaux et conviviaux, le milieu LGBTQIF discrimine les personnes handicapées.cf. notamment Goblet, Dominique : Handicap et Homosexualité. Les outils des mouvements de libération des femmes, des gays et des lesbiennes, la reprise de l'injure, la subversion volontaire des codes de genre, la pensée de l'empowerment, etc, sont-ils pertinents ou réutilisables dans notre cadre ?
Comment vivre son orientation sexuelle et/ou ses pratiques de genres tant que toute sexualité reste tabou, toute pratique sexuelle refusée ? Comment aborder la question du désir amoureux et/ou sexuel ?
Peut-on imaginer une culture du corps invalide, incomplet, des modes de vies, sexuels et affectifs subversifs, positifs et nouveaux ?
Comment, pour un valide, passer les différentes barrières physiques et symboliques qui limitent a priori la capacité à établir du lien ?
Quels espaces de rencontres et/ou de cohabitations sont possibles ? Qu'est ce qui existe, qu'est ce qui reste à inventer ? Quelle part peuvent jouer, jouent ou ne jouent pas, les politiques d'accessibilité des villes et des bâtiment quant à cette question ?

Le colloque « Handicap et sexualité dans une perspective militante, féministe et LGBTQI » représente un temps particulier des UEEH. Contrairement au reste de la manifestation, il est organisé dans le centre ville de Marseille et est ouvert au public. Il vise à créer un espace de travail privilégié qui ouvrirait à touTEs les travaux des UEEH.

Musique et sciences sociales nº 3 | La théorie queer est probablement l’un des courants de pensée critique récents les plus célèbres et controversés, dont l’impact s’est fait sentir aussi bien dans le domaine universitaire qu’en dehors de celui-ci. Apparu aux débuts des années 90 aux États-Unis, étroitement lié aux collectifs LGBT (lesbiennes, gays, bisexuels et transgenres) et fortement influencé par les travaux de Foucault (son Histoire de la sexualité et des concepts comme le « biopolitique » en particulier) et le déconstructionnisme derridien, ce courant de pensée se caractérise, sans pour autant constituer une tendance homogène, par une mise en question de la notion de genre et de l’idée d’un déterminisme génétique de l’identité et du comportement sexuel. Face à cela, la théorie queer propose l’hypothèse selon laquelle la sexualité serait le résultat d’une construction sociale. Il n’y auraient donc pas des sexualités biologiquement inscrites dans la nature humaine, mais plutôt des formes socialement changeantes d’exercer une ou plusieurs identités sexuelles, ce qui conduit à critiquer les classements sociaux provenant de la psychologie, la philosophie, l’anthropologie et la sociologie traditionnelles qui ont tendance à privilégier un seul étalon de segmentation (classe sociale, sexe, etc.).
La musicologie ne semble pas être restée à l’écart de l’influence de la théorie queer avec la création de groupes de recherche et la publication d’ouvrages, articles et thèses de doctorat dans lesquelles ont été traitées des problématiques relativement peu abordées, voire taboues, souvent autour de la construction des identités sexuelles à travers ou dans la musique. D’un point de vue méthodologique, on pourrait affirmer que cette perspective a participé du renouvellement théorique récemment intervenu à échelle internationale où les méthodes « traditionnels » issus de l’analyse musicale et la musicologie historique rencontrent l’histoire, la sociologie, la littérature, l’esthétique, l’anthropologie ou la géographie sociale, afin de saisir le processus de construction de l’objet « musique » et sa dimension sociale dans toute sa complexité.
Ce numéro de la revue Transposition. Musique et sciences sociales prétend participer à ce renouveau disciplinaire à travers des articles et des études de cas qui explorent des notions et des concepts issus de la théorie queer dans la musique, tout genre confondus, sans toutefois exclure des contributions plus théoriques qui interrogent sur les apports de ce courant de pensée dans la discipline musicologique, voire les impasses auxquelles il conduit.

Femmes et mouvements ouvriers, XIXème‐XXème siècles, en Suisse | | 31.03.2012 | | 2013 | | Publication | | Cahiers d’histoire du mouvement ouvrier | Si depuis quelques années l’histoire des femmes a connu un important développement de travaux relevant tant de la macrohistoire que de la microhistoire ainsi qu’un renouvellement de perspective avec les approches de genre, de nombreux champs restent néanmoins dans l’ombre. L’intérêt pour les questions genrées à la fin des années 1970 a notamment coïncidé avec le déclin de celui des classes. Toutefois, dès la fin des années 1990, les études en sciences sociales et humaines ont croisé différents types de rapports sociaux dans leurs approches. C’est dans ce sillage, que l’intérêt pour les classes sociales renaît de ses cendres. Cet outil d’analyse n’est plus envisagé seulement dans une perspective marxiste mais en conjonction avec d’autres rapports de pouvoir.
En accordant une place centrale à la dimension du genre, nous souhaitons explorer son croisement avec celle de classe et questionner le rôle et le rapport des femmes aux mouvements ouvriers en Suisse, dans une perspective diachronique. Au fil de l’évolution, quelle est la place des femmes dans les mouvements ouvriers? Ont-elles développé des stratégies pour y occuper une place? Ont-elles revendiqué des activités offrant une plus grande visibilité dans le groupe ? Se sont-elles constitué en réseau et si oui à quelle échelle ? Quels rapports entretiennent-elles avec les syndicats ? Les sources sont souvent lacunaires à ce propos, faisant la part belle au rôle des hommes. Pourtant, les usines ont compté de nombreuses ouvrières ayant pris part aux mouvements. Cet aspect est visibilisé notamment lors de conflits et de grèves. Pourquoi les ouvrières sont généralement peu présentes voir imperceptibles dans les documents ? Est-ce uniquement parce qu’elles occupaient des positions et des activités subalternes au sein des mouvements ? Retracer l’histoire des femmes et des mouvements ouvriers pose inévitablement la question des sources. Quels type de documents sont disponibles selon quelle période? Si pour la deuxième partie du XXème siècle, une surabondance de sources est disponible (documents écrits, radiophoniques, audiovisuels, par exemple) dont le recours précieux aux témoignages, cela n’est pas le cas pour la fin du XIXème siècle et la première moitié du XXème siècle. Comment dès lors documenter cet aspect de l’histoire des femmes ? Par ailleurs, nous souhaitons également interroger un autre aspect de l’intersectionalité. A travers l’étude des femmes et des mouvements ouvriers, l’intérêt des travaux historiques se porte généralement sur deux paradigmes porteurs d’inégalités: ceux de genre et de classes. Qu’en est-il des femmes immigrées dans les mouvements ouvriers ? Participent-elles aux luttes ? Comment sont-elles perçues par les autres femmes au sein des mouvements? Apportent-elles d’autres revendications ?

| | Méthodes et enquêtes de terrain à l’épreuve du genre | | 31.03.2012 | | 24 mai 2012 | | Journée d'études | | IEP de Bordeaux | Cette journée d’étude se donne pour objectif de confronter les expériences de chercheur.e.s quant à la manière de gérer et d’objectiver les contraintes et/ou ressources et stratégies d’enquête liées au fait d’être un homme ou une femme dans un environnement lui même construit socialement sur des normes de genre. Il nous semble important de mettre en perspective le genre des chercheur.e.s avec l’impact d’autres rapports de pouvoir que sont la classe et la race. En effet, le genre, la classe et la race étant des rapports sociaux consubstantiels et coextensifs (D. Kergoat), il s’agira pour nous d’analyser leurs expressions, leurs imbrications et leurs conséquences sur le terrain.
A ce titre, cette approche réflexive qui met en évidence les relations de pouvoir à l’œuvre sur le terrain peut concerner toute recherche en science politique, et pas uniquement celles qui se donnent le genre pour objet. Nous invitons ainsi les chercheur.e.s à discuter leurs méthodes, leur rapport à l’objet et au terrain à partir d’un questionnement en termes de genre quel que soit leur sujet.

How are we to envision inclusive organizations, after all?
The buzzword of inclusive organization has been circulating in the world of corporate practice and diversity training for a few years already. For example, it occurs in the context of managing change through visualizing the goals of change. Management and employees are encouraged to consider their organization, workplace, team-processes, etc., in terms of inclusiveness, and focus upon the benefits of change, its positive impact on cooperation, organizational culture and individual well-being.
From a scholarly point of view, however, we argue for the need to conceive of inclusive organization from a broader and more theory-based perspective while referring to the interdisciplinary field of diversity studies. We are therefore here addressing scholars in the field of work and organizations informed by sociological and psychological perspectives. | | Gender and Subculture | | 01.04.2012 | | Friday 7th September 2012 | | Event | | Northumbria University (UK) | The notion of 'subcultures', articulated most prominently by Dick Hebdige in his 1979 seminal work, Subculture: The Meaning of Style, has undergone much revision in recent years. However a critical engagement with gender remains absent within the majority of work on 'subcultures'. Indeed, Angela McRobbie's (1980) 'Settling Accounts with Subcultures: A Feminist Critique? provides the cornerstone of our symposium, in terms of interrogating how gender is articulated in 'underground' cultural and social environments. The question of whether 'subculture' is still a valid term and how far 'subcultural' manifestations are reductively incorporated into the mainstream are relevant topics on the academic agenda. However research of girls and women's subcultural productions and engagements from queer, feminist and transgender scholars (e.g. Jack Halberstam, Doreen Piano, Susan Driver, Elizabeth K Keenan, Mary Celeste Kearney and Kath Browne) carve out a new territory for understanding the 'subcultural'. Given this reevaluation, it is timely to re-engage with how 'subcultural' genders (both femininities and masculinities) are represented in alternative society and discuss how far this can be politically subversive. For instance, the revival, nostalgia and popularity of rockabilly style, burlesque, roller derby, Slutwalks, Ladyfests, fanzine/blogging networks, Suicide Girls, Guerrilla Girls, riot grrrl and the participation of girls in underground music cultures all point to the need for an academic engagement with strategies of cultural resistance to dominant identities and norms.
Proposals of 200 words on subjects dating from the twentieth century onwards, are invited in but not confined to, the following areas:
- Commodity, mass culture and globalised cultures.
- 'Bedroom cultures': fanzines, magazines, gaming, social networking, blogs.
- Gender and 'Urban Tribes', 'Neo-tribes' and 'scenes'.
- Youth culture, activism, ageing, politics and resistance.
- Fictions, films, archives, photography and art.
- The body: identity, fashion, aesthetics, tattooing, piercing and body modification
- Music: jazz, hip-hop, heavy metal, punk, goth, rockabilly, riot grrrl
- Sexual representation: queers, lesbians, gays, non-monogamy, straight, fetish.
- Underground/amateur sports: roller derby, baseball, football, softball, rounders.
- Race and racial identities.
We would particularly welcome contributions from literature, film and television, art, photography, cultural studies, theatre, gender studies, psychology and sociology, history and politics. Depuis les années 60, le contexte politique et culturel s’est profondément transformé en matière de mœurs. Il a conduit à l'incorporation massive du sexe dans l'industrie de la mode et de l'entertainment, au point de transformer le sexe de siège des revendications utopistes en code publicitaire (et source de profit garanti). Il a discrédité tout type d'indisposition – imputable à une forme d'échec, de pessimisme ou de rigorisme anachronique – au profit d’une sexualité non pas débridée, quoique surexposée, mais rationalisée et valorisée comme capital personnel, signe de bonne santé. Dans le même mouvement, la juridiciarisation des rapports sexuels galvaudait souvent bien plus qu’elle ne portait les revendications féministes sur la sexualité, écartées sur l’essentiel. Il a vu, enfin, le développement de nouveaux rapports à soi avec la médicalisation accrue de la vie humaine et de ses caractères sexuels, ainsi que la prolifération des interventions technologiques sur les corps. Cela a provoqué, en réponse, des saillies néo-conservatrices (faisant corps avec les conservateurs habituels) attachées, bien plus qu'au souci des diverses asymétries que ces pratiques médicales exploitent, à l'ordre identitaire et familial de la tradition. Ainsi, les conditions de visibilité des sexes, d'érotisation de la sexualité (convoquée au titre de dépense utile !), de renouvellement des corporéités changent – et rencontrent des résistances. Au regard de ces évolutions, ce dossier se propose d'explorer les articulations actuelles entre art (de faire), sexe, sexualité, corps et politique.
À quel titre le sexe est-il mobilisé aujourd’hui dans les pratiques artistiques (comme objet de représentation, matériau à façonner, point de vue, processus de subjectivation, expérience...) ?
En rapport avec quelles préoccupations politiques est-il convoqué, par qui et de quelle façon ? En particulier, quels usages en font les artistes féministes et les minorités sexuelles ?
Quelles déterritorialisations (avec quelles éventuelles reterritorialisations) provoquent les nouvelles corporéités, les nouvelles identités, quelles stratégies ou dispositifs sont explorés pour tenter d'échapper à la reconduction des normes sexuelles dominantes ?
Par ailleurs, qu’en est-il de l’érotisme ? Quels agencements, quelles forces en renouvellent les formes, les registres, les vecteurs ?
Enfin du côté du quotidien, quels arts de faire et arts de vivre ont été créés par l'investissement technologique des sexes ?

Although there is solid, and growing, scholarship on the reality and efficacy of women's resistance to rape and sexual assault, many scholars, activists, funding agencies, and members of the lay public remain skeptical about women's right and capacity to thwart an attack, and about the ethics of teaching and funding
of self-defense. Moreover, while both scholarly and advocacy literature on violence against women often discusses prevention, resistance, and intervention, these concepts do not always imply women's use of verbal and physical self-defense techniques. Increasingly, we see positive images of women successfully defending themselves against perpetrators of violence in popular culture, but scholars of violence against women have much to communicate to both scholarly and lay audiences about women's use of self-defense.
This special issue calls for papers that focus on the ways in which women prepare to defend themselves against sexual assault, the multiple and diverse methods women employ - including the use of physical aggression and violence - in their own defense, the effectiveness of self defense, and how self defense and resistance to sexual assault is understood and constructed in individual, social, cultural, and legal contexts. We define the term sexual assault broadly, to include verbal, non-verbal, and physical threats or acts of sexual violence, both implied and enacted; similarly, we define the term self-defense to include verbal and physical strategies, including aggressive, violent, and lethal means, that thwart imminent or ongoing acts of sexual violence and to serve to maintain women's physical, sexual, and psychological integrity.
Possible topics include:

| We invite articles using a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, including empirical research, research notes, review essays, legal notes, and clinical notes. Empirical research articles should not exceed 30 pages, and all other submissions should be between 12 and 18 pages, including references, tables, and figures. Manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced, with footnotes, references, tables, and charts on separate pages, and should follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition).
Each article should begin with an abstract of about 100 words. | | Amour, toujours - Du Cantique des Cantiques ... à Meetic | | 15.04.2012 | | Automne 2012 | | Publication | | Le Temps des Médias n° 19 | L’objectif premier de ce dossier du Temps des Médias (n°19) sera de sonder ces affinités supposées entre amour et médias et d’interroger la normativité qui leur semble inhérente : l’amour dans les médias renvoie souvent, en effet, à une représentation des rôles masculins et féminins conforme à la norme hétérosexuelle, voire sexiste. Il semble pourtant difficile de statuer sur un éventuel rôle prescripteur des médias dans l'évolution des mœurs : oscillant entre un rappel des conventions sociales et l’exaltation du bonheur individuel, ceux d’entre eux qui n’hésitent pas à afficher un rôle pédagogique sont-ils plutôt porteurs d’une idéologie émancipatrice ou conservatrice ?
Loin de vouloir faire triompher une conception de l’amour sur toutes les autres, il s’agira, dans ce dossier, de faire droit à la diversité des amours et surtout de mettre au jour les relations complexes entre certains discours et/ou comportements amoureux, d’une part, et les transformations, au fil de l’histoire, des genres, modèles, institutions et publics médiatiques, d’autre part.

Die Veranstaltung versteht sich als Werkstatt, in der Forschungsprojekte in allen Stadien ihres Entstehungsprozesses vorgestellt und ebenso ganz unterschiedliche Probleme aufgeworfen werden können. Resultate aus abgeschlossenen Forschungsarbeiten können ebenfalls präsentiert und diskutiert werden. Es soll den Teilnehmenden Gelegenheit zum interdisziplinären Austausch und zur Vernetzung mit anderen an Gender Studies interessierten Forschenden geboten werden. | | Le genre dans le contexte de crises économiques aggravées | | 16.04.2012 | | 7 et 8 septembre 2012 | | Colloque de la Société suisse d’Etudes Genre | | Berne | A l’heure actuelle, les crises économiques se succèdent à un rythme toujours croissant : crises bancaire, financière, alimentaire, ainsi que des subprimes, de l’euro, de la dette, des exportations. Elles sont les signes et les manifestations d’une crise systémique du capitaliste profondément enracinée qui affecte non seulement la périphérie, les pays du Sud dans leur globalité mais, au plus tard depuis 2008, également, et définitivement, les sociétés occidentales. On attend de la classe politique qu’elle prenne des mesures contre cette évolution alarmante ; dans le même temps, les dynamiques économiques se dérobent à toute tentatives politiques de pilotage et de régulation, plus précisément, elles les suppriment consciemment. Les phénomènes de crise économique sont portés et amplifiés par des crises écologiques sur lesquelles le politique n’a qu’à peine plus de possibilités d’action, ce qui renforce encore la crise politique. Dans une grande partie du monde, ces processus ont amené un renforcement des réactions sociales, une hausse des inégalités et une augmentation des tensions sociales et des protestations.
Ces transformations, dramatiques, affectent également le genre et les rapports de genre. Les processus de déstructuration économique, avec leurs conséquences d’une part sur le travail qu’il soit ou non rémunéré, d’autre part sur les budgets publics, amènent à une reconfiguration entre et au sein des sexes.
Certaines voix se sont élevées dans les Etudes Genre, en particulier dans la recherche féministe en économie, pour les mettre en évidence. La manière dont toutes ces évolutions peuvent être décrites dans une perspective de genre n’en est qu’au début des investigations et à sa conceptualisation.
Avec son colloque 2012, la SSEG souhaite créer une plateforme pour un premier état des lieux élargi de ces processus de déstructuration économiques et leur signification pour le genre et les rapports de genre et ainsi apporter une contribution à une discussion constructive et à une évaluation critique. Elle invite les chercheu∙e∙s à présenter des travaux élaborés selon plusieurs axes.
Les thèmes suivants seront examinés sous la perspective du genre :
- Notion de crise, concept de précarisation, théories du capitalisme et du genre, approches théoriques
- Participation au marché du travail, conditions de travail, revenus, précarité, pauvreté
- Economie du care, travail non‐rémunéré, love labour, travail rémunéré dans le care, travail du sexe
- Politiques de la crise et crise de la politique, transformation de l’Etat social et de l’Etat‐providence, politique migratoire
- Profit, richesse, secteur de la finance
- Economisation du cadre de vie (Lebenswelt) : expansion des logiques de consommation, financiarisation des corps et des sentiments, sexualisation/sexualité
- Populisme et extrémisme de droite : antiféminisme, sexisme, homophobie, racisme, hostilité envers l’Islam.

Facing the challenges of the times, it has laboured to promote the visibility of women and gender in the field of research, pedagogy and politics, widening social perception of and advancing respect for difference. Its productive functioning proves resiliency of coping strategies and inspires belief in the value of the collective effort invested theoretically, politically and socially in ongoing feminist criticism and creativity.
It is on this occasion that we invite you to participate in the international conference held to celebrate Women’s Studies Centre’s 20th anniversary in November 16-18, 2012. The event will be hosted by the Faculty of International and Political Studies, University of Łódź. Bringing together scholars, students, activists, politicians and artists to critically address interconnections between theory and practice, the conference will reconsider and revaluate the place and role of feminism in contemporary world. It will offer a platform for creative and insightful encounters of various politics of location both Polish and international. Intersectionality has for the past decades gained currency not only as a useful critical tool of analyzing diverse sites of oppression but also as a productive strategy of dealing with everyday exclusionary practices and forms of inequality. Introducing intersectional framework, the conference will, therefore, attempt to respond thematically to the multiple axes of differentiation and consider how they interweave and affect equality.
Scholars and activists are welcomed to submit proposals – in either English or Polish – of individual presentations and panels of minimum three presenters from a wide range of areas analyzing significant issues that arise in feminist critique and praxis.

Comment l'esthétique se place-t-elle sur l'axe de l'extrême conformisme ou non-conformisme (défilés de mode qui se conforment aux codes de l'insolite, qui symbolisent ce que doit porter tout le monde pour la saison à venir, mais dans une forme extrême que personne ne pourrait sup-porter, sur des corps « parfaits » et totalement anormaux – des phénomènes vénérés). Le déguisement, son rapport avec le transgenre, ou inversement avec le fait de « mettre son sexe » (avez-vous bien mis votre sexe aujourd'hui?) pour assigner une spécificité à ce qui serait plutôt neutre, pour transcender la nature. Quelle place dans la fiction de nos jours ou avant, et sur différents continents? Quelle place à « l'anormal » incarné par le corps d'une personne ? Dans quel sens ce que nous avons appris à définir comme normal pourrait aussi être vu comme pas normal. Qu'est-ce que, de nos jours, la banalisation de l'aberration ? Comment s'incarne-elle par des personnages ou des mises en jeux de la littérature ? Qu'est-ce être en échec, et en contradiction, être normal ou anormal, défier les normes d'une façon flagrante ou cachée mais extrême, être en dérive, en opposition, aussi les contradictions entre normalité en apparence et le reste (à l’intérieur de sa tête)... Quel rapport entre « l'anormal » et l'échec, et la contradiction, par exemple entre l'intérieur et l'extérieur ? Comment l'échec peut-il être fructueux (y compris dans sa potentialité comique) ? Comment la vie est-elle une contradiction, la littérature s'inspire-t-elle forcément de cette notion, pour défier le prévisible ? Doit-on toujours surprendre en montrant l'inattendu chez un personnage, une situation, des éléments disparates ? Comment l'échec peut-il faire effet domino ? Un échec, une série d'échecs ; je suis anormal. Le rapport entre ne pas entrer dans les cases, et échouer selon les critères normatifs, ou selon ses propres critères (ça peut aussi être quelqu'un qui a réussi selon les mesures conventionnelles mais qui se sent en échec, ou le contraire : quelqu'un qui est un loser selon la société mais qui se sent très bien). On peut aussi explorer la notion « le monde à l'envers » et les contradictions dans le monde réel. Le supermarché qui préfère tout jeter, qui va même gâcher la nourriture avant de la mettre à la poubelle, pour empêcher aux personnes de s'en servir. Le théâtre qui préfère laisser des sièges vides que donner des places gratuites à celles qui demandent juste avant le levée du rideau... bref, les aberrations du monde normal. Ça peut concerner des scénarios dans la littérature, ou une littérature qui incarne l'anormal. Nous sommes également intéressées par des créations originales (nouvelle, poésie, théâtre, extrait de roman) et des traductions que par des articles de recherches et des essais.

On l’entend partout, la société vieillit et c’est au Québec, d’ailleurs, que l’on observe l’un des vieillissements les plus élevés et les plus rapides au monde. Ce vieillissement de la population s’accompagne d’un autre phénomène important mais moins discuté : sa féminisation. La majorité des québécois âgés de 65 ans et plus sont, en effet, des femmes, dans un ratio qui s’accentue avec l’âge à raison de 2 femmes pour 1 homme chez les 80 ans et plus, et de 5 pour 1 chez les centenaires (Conseil des aînés, 2007). Comment les femmes aînées vivent-elles l’avancement en âge et le fait d’être «vieilles» ou d’être considérées comme «vieilles» ? Quelles perceptions ont-elles de leur corps vieillissant ? Quelle est leur relation avec les hommes? Comment sont-elles perçues dans la société? De quoi est fait leur quotidien? Quelle est leur situation financière? Comment voient-elles leur rôle dans la famille mais aussi dans l’espace public (travail, milieu associatif)? Quelles valeurs et expériences désirent-elles léguer aux plus jeunes? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions qui animent ce numéro dont le but est de proposer une lecture féministe des conditions et des expériences de vie des femmes aînées qui sont encore mal (ou mé-) connues. Il nous paraît important de reconnaître que les rapports sociaux de sexe déterminent l’expérience du vieillissement car « la vieillesse a aussi un sexe », nous rappelle Pitrou (1997 : 149). Les études sur les aînées, qui proviennent majoritairement de la gérontologie sociale, ont jusqu’ici peu tenu compte des facteurs structuraux de notre société patriarcale qui marquent pourtant la trajectoire de vie des femmes. Ce sont donc les réalités spécifiques aux femmes aînées que nous voulons mettre en lumière dans ce numéro.
Trois axes de réflexion sont proposés :
- le rapport au corps qui renvoie bien sûr à la médicalisation des femmes aînées (ménopause,
antidépresseurs, etc.), mais aussi aux enjeux personnels et sociaux du rapport au corps vieillissant
(soins esthétiques, prise en charge médicale, sexualité, etc.) ;
- le rapport à la société et aux institutions, visant à interroger le statut social des aînées
(représentations sociales, stéréotypes, etc.), de même que leurs conditions de vie et de soins
(milieux d’hébergement, pauvreté, etc.) ou encore leur implication sociale (bénévolat,
engagement sociaux ou de proximité), etc. ;
- les rapports intergénérationnels, notamment le rôle des aînées dans la transmission de la
mémoire collective, à l’échelle de la famille mais aussi de l’espace public (la question de la relève
dans les groupes de femmes par exemple).

| | Queering Ecopsychology | | 01.06.2012 | | Publication | | European Journal of Ecopsychology | Ecopsychology potentially has a lot in common with queer theory and politics. Both are committed to transformational practices without drawing clear lines between personal and political, social and ecological. They both blur other boundaries, questioning taken for granted borders (e.g., between heterosexuality and homosexuality or self and ecosystem). Both have roots in feminism and include ongoing efforts to deepen awareness of intersecting patterns of power and oppression. Both invite us to expand our experiences of intimacy and relationships.
At the same time, Ecopsychology, like any other area of thought, has the potential to develop borders, orthodoxies. In what ways might those be softened, crossed, queered? What does queer theory, queer politics, have to offer to the tasks of radicalising ecopsychology, of keeping it vital?
Areas that might be addressed include:
- Expanding concepts of relationships and understandings of sexuality, noting how perceptions become narrow (e.g., through problematic normativity, self-scrutiny, consumerism, etc) and exploring how such expansions might enable more connectedness.
- How might/does a queer emphasis on playfulness help take the edge off of eco-earnestness? What might playful queer practices and theories contribute to ecopsychological methods of conversation and transformation? How might ecological discussions and other actions be seriously playful and playfully serious?
- 'Think of the children!': heteronormativity, the (re)production of capitalism and ecological discourse. How might a queerly ecopsychological approach reconsider family, care and (population) growth?
- The unsustainability of (hetero or homo) normativity. How much energy does it take to conform? How might queer deconstructions make discussions and practices of ecological alternatives easier?
- Getting dirty. How might queer contribute to explorations of fear and shame, embodiment and desire in sexuality and ecology?
- Queering taxonomy: species, sexualities, psychologies, genders, races and other categories of control. How 'natural' are the binaries of gender and sexuality we've been taught to believe in? How do taxonomies of psychopathology relate to other taxonomies of humans and of the more than human world?
- Ecofeminism and queer theory. The former has been dismissed as essentialist with the latter deconstructing discourses of 'the natural'. Is there room for a reunion between the two? What might grow at this edge?
- Care of the self, care of the earth. What would happen if Joanna Macy and the late Foucault met to talk tactics? What do indigenous queer perspectives have to offer to vital questions of loving ourselves and the earth?
- Queers in the wild. What might radical faeries, women's communes and festivals, gay male cruising grounds, queer ecotherapists and ecoactivists, queer pagans and gardeners and other queer spaces/practices have to offer to the process of queering ecopsychology?
- Queer temporalities. How might queer discussions of time connect with and contribute to ecopsychological emphasis on cyclical versus linear experiences of time?
- Ecoqueer social movements. In what ways are queer activists expanding and exploring ecological justice? How might a queer focus on the potential fluidity of emotions and desires, genders and sexualities transform Transition Towns, Climate Camps, NGOs and other ecological movements?
- And so much more! We'd love to be surprised by other areas of overlap, synergy and compassionate critique contributors might come up with.

Feminist research within leisure studies is at a critical juncture. As pioneers of feminist leisure research retire, there is a need to celebrate and highlight the vast array of leisure scholarship that continues through a feminist lens and chart new directions in an ever changing field. This special issue will harness the energy of current feminist leisure research, highlighting its breath, depth, and diversity. In so doing, we aim for the special issue to serve as a galvanizing force by creating a community of new and established feminist leisure scholars who can network, strategize, and take action together in both research synergies and other more tangible ways (such as resurrecting the gender and leisure group in World Leisure).
Grounded firmly in third wave feminism, the special issue will explore the intersections, transformations, and innovations in feminist ways of thinking and conducting research. Moreover, the special issue aims to highlight and discuss the complexities and contradictions that exist within third wave feminism. The special issue will create a space for reflection and reinvigoration of feminist debates and directions related to diverse methodologies, conceptual traditions, and ways of writing through gendered leisure.
Authors (including those in post-doctoral positions and new graduate students) are invited to submit manuscripts that include empirical studies from a broad range of feminist theoretical orientations, which may also be combined with similarly informed perspectives (i.e., queer theory, gender theory, post-colonial theory, postmodernism, feminist masculinities, etc). Conceptual discussion focused on policy, activism, and politics is also welcome. We invite contributions from a broad range of substantive topics, approaches to conducting and representing leisure research, as well as multidisciplinary perspectives (women’s studies, geography, sociology, psychology, cultural studies, history, economics, environmental studies et al).
| All contributors need to ensure that submitted articles have a feminist focus that explores leisure as a broad or specific context (i.e., tourism, events, sport, recreation, parks, the arts, pop culture) within the context of debates in the literature. Submitted manuscripts will undergo the normal review process and should adhere to the “Instructions for Authors” as outlined by the Journal of Leisure Research. European second-wave feminism – loosely denoting the emergence of feminist activism in the 1960s and 1970s – has been extensively studied, but there is very little work on new and emerging feminist mobilisations.
Several decades on from second-wave feminism, European societies have changed in significant ways, many of them gendered, and many of which might be said to have arisen in response to feminist social movements. Recent years have seen the redrawing of national boundaries, the fall of communism and rise of capitalism in Eastern Europe, the increasing influence of neoliberalism, the development of new information technologies, and the feminization and increasing precarity of the labour market. Although there is now a substantial literature on the gendered aspects of these transformations and the impact of feminism on state institutions, there is little research on how contemporary feminist activist movements respond to, and engage with, these profound transformations in the gender regimes of European societies.
Additionally, many academic and social commentators have said that feminist movements are no longer as vibrant and radical as they once were and that young people are disconnected from feminism and social movement activism more broadly. But it is evident that feminism continues to be a significant social and political force, albeit often in ways that depart from traditional models of movement activism and cut across generational boundaries.
Against this backdrop, the special issue asks: how have 21st century feminisms responded to the changing gendered realities of contemporary Europe? Is European feminist activism in decline, or is it taking on a renewed visibility and significance? And in what ways do the demands and practices of European feminists converge and diverge in different contexts?
Questions to be explored include, but are not limited to, the following:
- What are the key demands and foci of contemporary feminist activisms, and how do they vary across contexts?
- What kinds of strategies, tactics and organisational structures characterise new feminist activisms in Europe?
- What is the cultural and political reach of “third wave” feminism? To what extent is a wave-based generational metaphor appropriate for making sense of the histories of feminism in different contexts? What are the main (dis)connections between contemporary feminist activism, and earlier waves/generations?
- Is feminism still a women’s movement? What is the place of men and queer, intersex and transgendered people in these new feminist groups?
- How do diasporic communities and the politics of migration interact with the new feminisms?
- What role do new information technologies play within the new feminisms?
- What are the connections between feminist social movements and left-wing politics? What role does feminism play in student protest and activism against austerity measures across Europe?
- In what ways do new feminist movements reflect and contest their different national landscapes? In what ways have democratic transitions (including those from fascism and communism) impacted upon feminist movements? Or is the distinctiveness of nation for feminist movements increasingly eroded in a digitally-mediated world? How do European feminists engage with globalization? Is what ways is the local (e.g. the city, neighbourhood or place) still significant?
- How do social movements relate to the institutionalisation of feminism in national and international politics (e.g. through the EU)? What are the different ways in which feminist movements engage with political parties?
- How do new feminist movements address intersectionality in relation to ethnicity, class, sexuality, health, disability and other related areas?
- How are new feminisms engaging with the changing religious realities, including secularization and the rise of fundamentalisms, of countries in Europe?

Faire la fête/ carnaval : soupape ou subversion ? Les sous-cultures, les moments d'exiose, d'extase, d'inattendu, les moments où on « prévoit l'inattendu », aller en boite, boire des bières chez des copains, partir en retraite de méditation. Ou au contraire, les moments où on l'attend le moins. Les fantômes de Halloween, relique d'un passé païen... les cases pour faire la fête, son utilité sociale, pour être de bons pions de lundi, mais aussi (surtout) tout ce qui dépasse, qui déborde quel que soit le contexte, l'inattendu vrai. Ça peut être aussi simple que l'enfant qui, passant devant les cages des girafes, des tigres, ne prête son attention qu'à un moineau qui suit les traces de miettes laissées par un autre enfant. On peut explorer de tels moments dans la fiction, ou des écritures qui les incarnent. Qu'est-ce qu'une ambiance propice au dépassement de l’ego, du soi, et quelle alchimie peut se faire entre personnes ? Quelle est la place de l'art ? Comment à travers le masque, peut-on de fait lâcher le masque social pour devenir plus authentique, pour laisser place à ses instincts les plus bas, les plus basiques, charnels, exhibitionnistes, sauvages... quel rapport entre fête, carnaval et rituel, en considérant la notion du sacré ? A quoi sert la transcendance, et est-ce un besoin foncièrement humain ? Comment la littéraire peut-elle la représenter, voire l'incarner ? Nous cherchons aussi bien des exemples inédits d'expression littéraire transcendante dans la forme, que celles qui décrivent ou narrent des instances de transcendance, ainsi que des articles, essais, traductions...

| | Making the Difference – Diversity, Inequality, and Intersectionality in Theory and Practice | | 31.07.2012 | | Special Issue of the Journal Equality, Diversity and Inclusion | Since the breakdown of socialist systems, all modern societies can be understood as effectively capitalist societies and hence revived in a stark form the confrontation and tensions between the original principle of formal equality expressed in bourgeois philosophical ethics and the ultimate outcome of ever greater economic inequality (between nations, groups, and individuals).
Historically, the economic order has been grounded in the division between domestic labour and gainful employment (work); and as well on ownership relations manifesting inequalities between class, gender, and ethnic groups within the state, and between rival nation states within a system of international dependencies. Empirically, these orders of inequality are exhibited within the social order, for example in the subordination of private households to the economy as a whole, in the unequal value ascribed to differing economic sectors and in the societal position of individuals. | Completed articles must be submitted by July 31st 2012 and will be subject to double blind peer review. | | Embodied Action, Embodied Theory: Understanding the Body in Society | | 31.08.2012 | | Publication | | Special issue of Societies | This special issue follows the ISA World Forum on "The Body in the Social Sciences" to be held in Buenos Aries Aug 1-4, 2012 ( http://www.isa-sociology.org/buenos-aires-2012/rc/rc.php?n=RC54), but is also open to submissions of papers not presented at the Forum. This special issue focuses on the interconnectedness of the body and society, thus it will include works that explore how the body is shaped by and constrained through socio-cultural processes, as well as those that focus on how bodies in action affect the societies in which they operate. As Goffman (1972) pointed out in his seminal presidential address to the American Sociological Association, "The Interaction Order," we cannot act without our bodies, meaning sociology must account for the body.
Moreover, accounting for the body and its interconnectedness with society gives rise to recurring debates concerning whether or not a true sociology of the body requires a recasting of sociological theory. Recent sociological writing on the body by such writers as Chris Shilling, Bryan Turner, Arthur Frank, Margaret Shildrick, and Mike Featherstone (to name a few) does more than merely mark out a substantive area for the body that leaves traditional sociological perspectives unchallenged. Rather, this body of work has made monumental inroads in reinserting the body into sociological research and bridging that work into a vigorous theory of the sociological body and of embodied sociology. In this work, the classic works of Goffman and Foucault have been re-examined for their embodied perspectives, the contributions of feminist scholars have been brought into a sociological framing of the body, and the implications of consumerism, aging populations, high modernity and postmodernity have been incorporated into a burgeoning sociological examination of the body. Current scholarship continues working towards linking corporeal experience to social processes, systems, and structures, permitting sociologists of the body to understand the workings of power, interactions between social actors, and the ways that social norms and roles operate in nuanced and analytically powerful ways.
This special issue invites papers that further develop these theories and sociological understandings of the body. We are particularly interested in papers that explore the connections between the lived body and the body as a set of social experiences, insights into the body as a site of social control, and examinations of the body as a vehicle for the expression and consumption of culture.

Associés, les deux termes, sexe et politique, ouvrent un vaste champ de réflexion que l’actualité a brutalement remis sur le devant de la scène, enjoignant, pour comprendre le présent, à revisiter ses multiples déclinaisons. Sexe et politique s’articulent en effet sur de nombreux plateaux idéologiques, historiquement situés et aux résonances contrastées. Les liens entre formes de sexualité et modes de domination politique ont ainsi nourri l’inspiration freudo-marxiste des décennies 1950/1960. Le mouvement féministe, dans les années 1970 a reformulé la coagulation du sexe et du politique en luttant pour que le corps des femmes cesse d’être la propriété de l’État et des hommes et leur soit restitué dans toutes ses dimensions sexuées et générales. La fin de la guerre froide et les croisades humanitaires avaient laissé croire que dans les anciennes démocraties industrielles le politique avait été définitivement délié de ses avatars sexuels de toutes sortes. La barbarie des tyrans assoiffés de vierges aurait été refoulée vers des sphères lointaines dans la Chine maoïste ou dans les terres musulmanes, où les horreurs sidérantes perpétuées par les despotes déchus s’étalent cependant encore aujourd’hui dans les médias.
Et pourtant, sexe et politique ont refait ensemble une irruption fracassante dans le monde globalisé, au sein même de ses organes de « bonne gouvernance ». Dès lors, une autre trame s’est fait jour appelant à dénoncer une violence sexuelle masculine irrépressible et omniprésente. Derrière la centralité du viol qui incontestablement perdure partout et dans toutes les classes sociales, seraient retissées dans l’imaginaire des positions d’assignation pérennes des femmes aux rôles naturalisés de victime. La problématique de leur consentement s’en voit réactualisée souvent avec justesse mais parfois dans des termes extrêmes d’assimilation de tout acte sexuel à une domination hégémonique et forcluante. Dans ce théâtre fantasmatique fascinant c’est la figure même du désir qui paraît pouvoir être expulsée. Quel sens donner alors à cette éradication symbolique dans un monde saturé par le(s) marché(s) et la consommation hédoniste.
Ce numéro de L’homme et la société souhaite — bien au-delà du postulat désormais bien institué que le sexe est politique — interroger et confronter sous différents angles et à des époques variées les constructions idéologiques qui ramènent la sexualité sur la scène du politique : ces constructions mobilisent le capital symbolique des sociétés mais le transforment sous l’effet des imaginaires qui visent à dépasser les situations socioéconomiques et politiques. La conjoncture présente de crise — qui édifie l’altérité en négativité radicale — est particulièrement propice à la réflexion : les débats sont nombreux qui font de la sexualité un enjeu politique majeur sur des champs aussi contrastés que la prostitution, la sexualité précoce des petites filles, la pédophilie, l’homoparentalité, etc. Quels sont les termes et les contradictions internes à la somme de ces débats prise comme une totalité significative et un symptôme du politique et de la politique au présent ?
Sexe et politique convoquent donc philosophes, historiens, sociologues, politologues, économistes, anthropologues et psychanalystes à questionner et penser ensemble leurs strates innombrables et plurivoques parce qu’aliénation et émancipation s’enchevêtrent lorsque le sexe s’invite à la table du et de la politique

Au cœur des politiques de l’emploi notamment à destination des moins qualifiés, le secteur – inclus en France dans les services à la personne – est également appelé à répondre à d’autres objectifs comme celui d’assurer une meilleure conciliation des temps familiaux et professionnels. Au cœur des rapports de genre tant au sein de l’espace familial que de l’espace professionnel, ces emplois questionnent également d’autres rapports sociaux comme les rapports de classes ou encore les relations entre nationaux et immigrés.
