The conference “Gender, Family and Peasant Farming” offers a gendered social and cultural reading of the evolution of agricultural worlds in the North and the South confronted to a certain number of difficulties and impasses. This conference aims at showing how a gendered reading of agriculture throws light on new organizational experiences, but also on new ways of producing, on choices of productive systems, and on particular relationships to the land. Particularly, the conference questions the links between agriculture, community development, and environment by mobilizing the tools of gender analysis.

Find out how technologies for sustainable development can be more effectively appropriated whilst responding to the social needs and the realities of the beneficiaries.

Learn how interdisciplinary research and partnerships can be established in a cross disciplinary manner.

Focus on ways to improve transfer and support the co-creation of technologies. Reflect on methods and instruments that are the most appropriate to guarantee the sustainability of the transfer, analyze their impact on society and what can be done to promote the exchange of knowledge.

Une recherche de politique sociale sensible au genre devrait mettre au centre la question du bien-être social des femmes et se focaliser sur les besoins et les intérêts de celles-ci. Répondre à ce postulat féministe classique est devenu plus difficile. D’une part, compte tenu des évolutions théoriques dans la recherche sur les genres (mot-clé: intersectionnalité), il ne semble plus indiqué de considérer les femmes a priori comme une catégorie homogène aux intérêts partagés. D’autre part, les bouleversements socio-politiques de ces deux dernières décennies ont eu pour conséquence que le bien-être des individus est passé au deuxième plan par rapport au bien-être économique de l’Etat. Sous le signe de l’activation et des investissements sociaux, la politique sociale est devenue une annexe de la politique économique et du marché du travail dans la concurrence internationale, et les citoyennes et citoyens sont tout d’abord considérés comme porteurs de capital humain et comme main-d’œuvre potentielle. Le réajustement du rapport entre travail (rémunéré) et bien-être social ne se fait pas sans conséquences pour les rapports entre les genres. Ainsi, la politique de l’investissement social prône le modèle de la couverture du minimum vital par l’activité lucrative pour toutes et tous. Dans ce contexte, l’égalité des genres apparaît comme moteur de modernisation en exploitant le potentiel de main-d’œuvre des femmes. Or, du fait qu’un modèle «adult worker» est imposé sans nouvelle répartition correspondante du travail de care, les femmes restent destinées à fournir l’essentiel du travail socialement indispensable, mais non rémunéré.

Whittier Law School (Los Angeles), in collaboration with the Williams Institute of UCLA Law School, is once again organising the only summer school in the world devoted to sexual orientation law. The program will take place at the Universitat de Barcelona. The curriculum will have a focus on international and comparative law. Eight courses will be taught by American and European scholars, practitioners and policy makers. Students would typically follow three of these courses.
Non-USA students can choose to enrol for all four weeks of the program, or to do only the first or second half of the program. For a limited number of non-USA students, a sharply_ __REDUCED FEE_ of USD 1000 applies (for the complete program or for one half of it; this does not include housing, insurance, etc., nor the application fee of USD 100).

Ziel der Tagung ist eine zeitgeschichtlich nahe und interdisziplinäre Diskussion der Frage nach politischer und gesellschaftlicher Partizipation von Frauen in muslimischen Gesellschaften vor, während und nach dem Arabischen Frühling, sowie der Bedeutung von Geschlechterkonstruktionen in einer Gesellschaft im Wandel. Gibt es eine Veränderung in den patriarchal geprägten Gesellschaften hinsichtlich Geschlechterpolitiken? Inwieweit werden Geschlechterverhältnisse neu verhandelt? Wie ist die aktuelle Situation von Frauen in den instabilen Gesellschaften? Kommt es zu einem Erstarken des Feminismus oder eher einer islamistisch-konservativen Entwicklung? Welche Rolle spielen und spielten Frauen in der Politik muslimischer Gesellschaften? Welche Verknüpfungen gibt es zwischen Islam, Feminismus und Revolution? Welche Rolle spielt Männlichkeit in der arabischen Revolution?

Mit zunehmender Geschwindigkeit folgt gegenwärtig eine ökonomische Krise auf die andere: Subprime‐Krise, Bankenkrise, Finanzkrise, Ernährungskrise, Eurokrise, Schuldenkrise, Exportkrise. Dies sind unterschiedliche Bezeichnungen und Ausprägungen einer tief greifenden Systemkrise des Kapitalismus, welche längst nicht mehr nur die Peripherie, die Länder des globalen Südens, sondern spätestens seit 2008 definitiv auch die westlichen Gesellschaften trifft. An die Politik wird zwar die Erwartung formuliert, etwas gegen die bedrohliche Entwicklung zu unternehmen; gleichzeitig entziehen sich die ökonomischen Dynamiken allen politischen Lenkungs‐ und Regelungsversuchen, beziehungsweise sie werden diesen bewusst entzogen. Gerahmt und verschärft werden die ökonomischen Krisenphänomene durch ökologische Krisen, auf welche die Politik ebenfalls kaum mehr zu reagieren vermag und die damit die Krise der Politik weiter verstärkt. Diese Prozesse haben in weiten Teilen der Welt zu einer Verschärfung der gesellschaftlichen Widersprüche, einer Zuspitzung von Ungleichheiten und einer Zunahme sozialer Spannungen und Protesten geführt.
Diese dramatischen Veränderungen betreffen auch Geschlecht und die Geschlechterverhältnisse. Die ökonomischen Umstrukturierungsprozesse mit ihren Folgen für die bezahlte und unbezahlte Arbeit und für die öffentlichen Haushalte führen zu einer Neukonfigurationen zwischen und innerhalb der Geschlechter. Darauf haben bereits verschiedene Stimmen aus der Geschlechterfoschung, insbesondere aus der feministischen Ökonomie hingewiesen. Wie allerdings die Folgen all dieser Entwicklungen konkret und im Detail aus einer Geschlechterperspektive aussehen, ist erst in den Anfängen untersucht und begriffen worden.
An ihrer Fachtagung 2012 will die SGGF eine Plattform schaffen für eine erste breitere Bestandesaufnahme dieser ökonomischen Umstrukturierungsprozesse und deren Bedeutung für Geschlecht und die Geschlechterverhältnisse und damit einen Beitrag leisten zu einer produktiven Diskussion und kritischen Einschätzung.

These days one economic crisis follows the next, picking up speed at every turn: subprime crisis, bank crisis, financial crisis, nutrition crisis, euro crisis, debt crisis, export crisis. These are the different names and characteristics of the deep-seated systemic crisis capitalism finds itself in, a crisis that no longer only affects the so called periphery, the countries of the global South. By 2008 at the latest this crisis also deeply impacts Western societies. This in turn leads to increased calls on political institutions to do something against these threatening developments; at the same time these economic dynamics seem to escape all attempts at control or regulation by political institutions or rather they are strategically excluded from political control. In addition, the economic crises at hand are framed and exacerbated by ecological crises. Incidentally, political institutions have difficulties confronting those as well, which only intensifies the crisis of the political. In large parts of the world these trends have led to the aggravation of social paradoxes and inequalities and to the increase of social tensions and protests.
These dramatic economical and political changes also affect gender and gender relations. The economical restructuring and its effect on paid and unpaid labor, and on public budgets, led to a reconfiguration of relations between and among genders. Different strands of gender studies, at the forefront feminist theory, have pointed to this fact. However, the process of analyzing the effects of these different processes in more concrete and detailed ways and from a gender perspective, is still in its early stages.
The Swiss Gender Studies Association 2012 conference thus provides a platform for a first broader assessment of these economic restructuring processes and their meaning for gender and gender relations. The conference intends to instigate productive debates and foster critical understandings of these processes.

In co-operation with the network NeuroGenderings, the Gender Research Office at the University of Vienna, will launch a three-day international, interdisciplinary conference entitled "NeuroCultures – NeuroGenderings II" 13 - 15 September 2012 at the University of Vienna.

The aim of the conference "NeuroCultures – NeuroGenderings II" is to improve reflective scientific approaches concerned with sex/gender and the brain, and to gain particular insight into the transformation or persistence of gendered norms and values that accompany the mutual entanglements between brain research, various disciplines and public discourse.

Die Tagung hat zum Ziel, die geschlechtersensible Forschung zu Berufsfindungsprozessen und die institutionelle Transitionsforschung am Gegenstand geschlechter(a)typischer Verläufe und Übergänge von Schule in Ausbildung und Beruf verstärkt und systematisch aufeinander zu beziehen. Im Zentrum sollen daher Beiträge stehen, die sich aus geschlechtertheoretisch reflektierter Sicht mit der Opportunitätsstruktur des Bildungssystems und/oder vergeschlechtlichten Berufsfindungs- oder Transitionsprozessen auseinandersetzen. Dabei sind sowohl qualitative als auch quantitative Forschungszugänge erwünscht.

The conference aims to systematically bring together gender-sensitive research on career choice and institutional transition research in addressing gender-(a)typical trajectories and transitions from school to vocational training and employment. The contributions should focus on the opportunity structures of the education system and/or gendered processes of career choice and transition from a perspective informed by gender theory. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are welcome.
