| | Special Issue of Feminist Review - 'Media transformations ' 1821 | | 30.03.2010 | | Boundaries between production and consumption, and between previously discrete media practices are dissolving. This special issue of 'Feminist Review' will analyse how rapid shifts in contemporary media processes and practices are impacting on women ' s engagement with communications and production as well as the representation of marginalized groups. Current developments such as Web 2.0, networking, online distribution and mobile media will be explored in the context of gendered histories of media production and reception.
The intention is to look at change and continuity in the uses, practices, aesthetics and theorization of the media in the light of the growth of new pervasive technologies. We are hoping that the issue will explore the following questions: How do new media technologies affect gendered authorship and agency? How does age and generation intersect with gender with respect to the uses of 'old' and 'new' media? What cultural and historical variations are there in terms of the meanings and impact of media and communications technologies?
Illustrated, reflective pieces by digital media practitioners are welcome and samples of work discussed may be uploaded to the Feminist Review website.
Possible topics might include:
'Alternative' media and feminist activism; networked cultures; gender, life histories and blogs; gender and authorship; women ́s cinema; questions of distribution; media employment; `post- convergence ́; ethics and representation; media processes; gender and media education
Submissions for the issue are welcomed from now until 30 March 2010. Articles should be between 6,000-7,000 words in length. An abstract of 200-300 words should accompany the article, plus a list of up to six keywords suitable for indexing and abstracting services. Detailed instructions on how to submit (electronic submission only) can be found at http://www.palgrave-journals.com/fr/index.html. We also welcome shorter pieces of creative or analytical writing (up to 1000 words, or 4000 words for interviews) or visual material on the theme for our 'Open Space' section. These pieces may be topical and/or polemical. They are not sent out to be peer-reviewed, but are selected by the editors of the issue. Feminist Review is one of Palgrave's most widely distributed and sucessful international jounrnals. Please find below the second call for papers for a special issue of the journal which will be published in October 2011 with details of how to submit via the online submission system. The initial deadline for articles for consideration is March 2010. We welcome expressions of interest from contributors. | | | Enquiries about the issue should be sent to Lizzie Thynne (l.thynne@sussex.ac.uk) or Dr Nadje Al-Ali (N.S.Al-Ali@soas.ac.uk). | | www.palgrave-journals.com/fr/index.html |
| | Queer Again? Power, Politics and Ethics1844 | | 31.03.2010 | | 23.-25. September 2010 | | International Conference of the Department of English and American Studies, HU-Berlin | The concept of queer is volatile and, at times, difficult to grasp. As a result, we need a continuous review of the fields and debates within Queer Theory. In his 2004 study No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive, Lee Edelman manoeuvred queer theory into a kind of aporia and thus deep crisis that persists to this day. Subscription to an “ethics of futility”, as Edelman suggests, signals that the borders of ethical thinking have been reached. However, in debates following the publication of Edelman’s book (as for instance, in the Social Text issue of 2005 with the programmatic title What’s Queer About Queer Studies Now?) the ethical impetus of queer criticism confronted and challenged the dominance of the so-called antisocial thesis. This ongoing debate and the regular recurrence of the antisocial thesis in its different manifestations reveals a pressing need to reflect anew the relationship between queer and theory, art, ethics, and politics. | We invite abstracts for 20-minute papers. Abstracts should be in English and not exceed 500 words. They should be accompanied by a short biographical sketch of about 250 words and sent to queer.conference@hu-berlin.de by March 31st 2010. | | | www.angl.hu-berlin.de/confslecs/queeragain |
| | The Flying University of Transnational Humanities1848 | | 01.04.2010 | | 11.06.2010-16.06.2010 | | Research Institute of Comparative History and Culture (RICH), Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea | The Flying University of Transnational Humanities is “in session” once per year for one week, and will normally be held during summer vacation. The host site changes on an annual or bi-annual basis and rotates between partner institutions. FUTH online runs year-round: through its dedicated website, a permanent online space will be provided for interactive discussions. All institutions, departments, and scholars are welcome to participate both offline and online.
For the initial three years (2010–2012), the overarching theme of FUTH will be “borders.” There have been numerous studies on how borders are constructed, negotiated, and policed and how they are simultaneously transgressed, challenged, and renegotiated. Borders are no longer seen simply as physical divisions but also as discursive practices and cultural institutions. However, the multiplicity and hybridity of borders (e.g., national, ethnic, cultural, geographical, gender, political, economic, etc), as well as their transnational scalability (e.g., local, national, supranational, global, etc), has yet to be intensively investigated. To address this gap, the first FUTH—which takes place from June 11–16, 2010, at the Research Institute of Comparative History and Culture, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea—will focus on “regions” in their multiple forms and examine them as sites of bordering practices and processes. Under the subheading of “Regions and Regionalization,” a combination of lectures, seminars, and presentation/feedback sessions—followed by a two-day conference—will encourage students to problematize the often naturalized categories of “Asia,” “Europe,” “Africa” or “Americas,” and to cultivate a deeper, more contextual understanding of the making and unmaking of regions.
| Applicants must be enrolled in postgraduate degree programs or have recently completed their master’s or doctoral degrees, and major in the humanities and social sciences—including history, literature, anthropology, cultural studies and other related fields. Students of all nationalities are welcome to apply. As enrolment numbers are limited, admission is based on merit.

| | Intimate Internationalism: Women Transforming the Political in Postwar Europe1865 | | 15.04.2010 | | 01.10-02-10-2010 | | Potsdam | Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung, Potsdam; Dr. Celia Donert (ZZF Potsdam); Dr. Janou Vorderwülbecke (Leinbitz Universität Hannover), Potsdam 01.10.2010-02.10.2010, Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung Deadline: 15.04.2010
This workshop aims to explore the gendered dimension of international politics, norms and institutions, as well as ideologies, perceptions and critiques of internationalism, in eastern and western Europe from 1945 to the mid-1960s. We aim to bring together historians working on the history of women's transnational organising, the gendering of international projects and processes of integration, the connections and transfers between ideologies and practices of gender equality and difference across geographic and political divides, and transnational approaches to gendered histories of post-war Europe that move beyond the conventional focus on the western part of the continent.
Potential topics might include, amongst others, the gender relations of post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation; the gendering of political and economic integration in western and eastern Europe; the traditionally 'feminine' yet increasingly complex and controversial fields of peace, philanthropic, humanitarian and development work; and the responses and contributions of social actors to international legal norms and institutions (eg UN, ILO, EEC) that either promised or limited equality between the sexes.
We seek to discover who was speaking in the name of 'women' and defining gender at the international level, and to explore the social, cultural and political processes that contributed to the gendering of international politics and projects. By inserting gender as a category into historical studies of international norms, organisations and processes of integration, we hope to trace the connections between intimacy and internationalism in a deeply divided post-war Europe.
Please send abstracts of 500 words (maximum) and a brief CV by 15 April 2010 to Celia Donert ( donert@zzf-pdm.de). The costs of travel and accommodation will be covered by the organisers. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by 1 June 2010.

The Making of an Intellectual Woman. 1994:185).
| | | AppelDS-60ans_ÉricLevéel-DavidRisse_2010 doc - final.pdf |

| | GENDERED WAYS OF KNOWING? GENDER, HUMANITIES AND NATURAL SCIENCES1851 | | 30.04.2010 | | December 1-4, 2010 | | Trento (Italy), Fondazione Bruno Kessler | The aim of this congress is to push the question about the epistemological function of the category "gender" further, in particular from the perspective of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. Since the "rupture epistemologique" of the late 18th century science has fabricated tools for sexualizing the objects of the world, while modern anthropology and biology have contributed to the universalization of gender cosmologies and the ontologization of binary gender codes. While gender studies have challenged this binary construction, they have also had a share in the naturalization of gender by using it as an independent variable. In recent years, however, the critique of gender studies has contributed to a self-critical reflection about methodologies and presumptions underlying research activities in different fields (including gender studies themselves), questioning the notion of knowledge itself. | We invite proposals for papers to be sent by email to gender2010@fbk.eu by April 30, 2010. | | | gender2010.fbk.eu | Gender_2010_CfP.pdf |
| | IMPLEMENTATION IN INTER- AND TRANSDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH, PRACTICE AND TEACHING1856 | | 03.05.2010 | | 15.-17. September | | Human Ecology Group, Institute of Environmental Sciences, University of Geneva | In a knowledge society, research questions, processes and results cannot be disconnected from everyday practices. Politicians, funding bodies and society at large increasingly demand of researchers to propose efficient ways of how to use abstract findings in concrete situations and as a common good. From the very start, implementation strategies should therefore include processes of embedding the research in its social and scientific contexts, recursiveness and negotiation with non-academic actors, and testing the expected impact through ‘real-world’ experiments. How exactly to bring research results to fruition, integrate theory and practice and build truly participative collaborations are key issues of inter- and transdisciplinarity.

| | "GENERATING BODIES: DISCURSIVE SEXED PRODUCTIONS”1847 | | 30.05.2010 | | 30. November-03. September 2010 | | Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona | II INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE THE TEXTS OF THE BODY
In the 21st century, the body is all but a certainty, and raises endless questions. How do we live in the body that we are / we have? How does it represent us, and to what extent? How does it become readable, understandable? What does it tell? What can it say and what can’t it say? Who or what does it say from? How can I get involved in what the body I am / I have says or represents ? Does my body belong to me or do I belong to it? Is this a relationship of belonging, or rather of participation without belonging? Which is the power of my body? What are the categories that hide or reveal it? What is the body?
These questions invite us to think about the relationship between our body, the discourses that constitute it, and the texts that have materialized it along with its socio-political potential. None of them, however, runs outside the articulation of sexes, genders and sexualities.
This time, the second conference “The texts of the body” will focus on the generation of bodies (and their regeneration and degeneration), understanding that these \"attributes\" --sex, gender and sexuality-- are inseparable from the materialization of bodies, of their own becoming bodies. The conference, then, is structured as an interdisciplinary meeting to reflect and debate on the body as a gendered and sexualized cultural issue.
Suggested topics:
* Body and literature: the body as text, the body as a literary theme ... * Body, culture and anthropology: customs, rituals, fashion, media, popular culture ... * Body and mind: language, theology, scientific discourse ... * Body and rules: deviated body, transsexuality, transgenderism, monstrosity ... * Body and technology: artificiality, cyberbody, surgery, bodybuilding ... * Body, science and medicine: knowledge, vision, look ...
The official conference languages will be Catalan, Spanish, and English. Communications will also be welcome in Galician, Portuguese, French, and Italian.
Coordination: Dr. Meri Torras Faculty of Philosophy and Letters Autonomous University of Barcelona 08193 Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès) Spain
| The full text of the communications should not exceed 2,500 words, excluding references. The maximum time for each presentation is 20 minutes.
Accepted papers will be subject to assessment by an expert committee which will select them to be published in thematic volumes of the collection Bodies that Matter. The publication rules, deadlines, etc. will be forwarded to interested people in due course.
Interested individuals must submit by email, before June 1, 2010, an abstract of 150 to 300 words summarizing the content of their communication and a list of keywords. They must also provide the contact details: participant\'s full name, institution to which s/he belongs and e-mail address.
The Scientific Committee will notify acceptance of the proposed communication from September 1, 2010.
The registration fees are:
• Participants with communication: 90 Euros • Attendees without communication: 25 Euros

| | Migration, Feminism and the Sex Industry.1861 | | 15.08.2010 | | 15.-17.09.2010 | | University of Neuchâtel | Migration has transformed feminists' ideological conflict about the meaning of prostitution. From being a two-sided debate about whether 'sex work is work' or 'violence against women', the discussion now must consider migration policies that favour 'highly skilled', white-collar and technical professionals over those willing to take less prestigious jobs in the informal sector, including the sex industry.
| Researchers working in the realm of migration and sex work and wishing to present a paper (15 minutes, followed by a 30 minutes discussion) are asked to send a title, and an abstract till August 15 to: Janine.dahinden@unine.ch | |

They might consider masculine spaces, feminine spaces, queer spaces, or virtual spaces; spaces such as the home, the office, the railroad, the apartment, the museum, the store, the church; the urban, the rural, the suburban; spaces as represented in various texts and discourses; uses of space; theories of space, and more.
