Ce Femmes First, organisé à l'initiative des clubs BPW (Business & Professional Women) Genève et Lausanne et du Career Women's Forum (CWF), a lieu le jour de l’Equal Pay Day, journée suisse de sensibilisation sur l’écart salarial hommes-femmes. En effet, en Suisse, le salaire médian des femmes reste inférieur de 19.3% à celui des hommes.
La date du 11 mars de l’Equal Pay Day correspond au nombre de jours supplémentaires qu’une femme doit travailler pour atteindre le même salaire annuel que ses collègues masculins, soit 50 jours en Suisse. L’Equal Pay Day s’étant tenu le 10 mars en 2009, la situation salariale des femmes se péjore.

„Denn das Männliche ist von Natur aus führungsgeeigneter als das Weibliche – falls es nicht irgendwo zu einem Verhältnis wider die Natur kommt –, und das Ältere und Reife ist das mehr als das Jüngere und Unreife“ (Arist. Pol. I, 12, 1259b1ff. Übersetz. Schwarz 1989).
Das Zitat der aristotelischen Politik lässt Gegensatzpaare in hierarchisch absteigender Ordnung erkennen: Mann und Frau, Alter und Jugend. Abweichungen von diesem Modell werden als widernatürlich impliziert, die Negation dieser Ordnung kann einen Konflikt hervorrufen.
Die traditionelle bzw. konventionelle Rangordnung der Geschlechter und Lebensphase wird im Mittelalter durch das Christentum rezipiert unter anderem mittels des Passus aus dem Brief Paulus an die Kolosser
(3,18-20: mulieres subditae estote viris sicut oportet in Domino / viri diligite uxores et nolite amari esse ad illas / filii oboedite parentibus per omnia hoc enim placitum est in Domino / patres nolite ad indignationem provocare filios vestros ut non pusillo animo fiant.
Biblia Sacra Vulgata, Editio Quinta, ed. Weber/Gryson, Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, Stuttgart 2007). Die beiden Zitate zeigen, dass Antike, frühes Christentum und Mittelalter konkrete Gesellschafts- und Geschlechtermodelle entwerfen. Auf einer vom Bamberger DFG-Graduiertenkolleg „Generationenbewusstsein und Generationenkonflikte in Antike und Mittelalter“ organisierten Nachwuchstagung vom 11. bis zum 13. März 2010 sollen Rollenmuster im Spannungsfeld der Geschlechter und Generationen näher untersucht werden.
Dabei werden Rollen im soziologischen Kontext durch Erwartungen, die sich an Normen orientieren, und die Bereitschaft, von den Erwartungen abweichendes Verhalten zu sanktionieren, bestimmt (nach Ulf; Schnegg 2006). Die Erwartungen an eine Rolle können sich demnach in ihrer Erfüllung positiv wie negativ realisieren, d.h. erfüllt oder eben nicht erfüllt werden. Gender-Forschung hingegen befasst sich mit dem Gegensatz von a-historischem Geschlecht (sex) und konstruierter Kategorie in sozialer Dependenz (gender). Der Begriff der ´Generation´ ist ebenso polyvalent. Zwei grundlegende Arten des Verständnisses werden unterschieden, so eine horizontal-synchrone und eine vertikal-diachrone Akzentuierung. Während erstere eine soziale Gruppe ungefähr Gleichaltriger mit gemeinsamer Geisteshaltung umfasst, ist zweite aus einer genealogisch-familialen Betrachtungsweise erwachsen.
Auf der Tagung sollen mehrere Fragestellungen betrachtet und diskutiert werden. So z.B., inwiefern Verhaltenserwartungen von Rollenträgern an sich selbst gestellt oder von Anderen an sie herangetragen (z. B. oikos,
familia) werden. Kommt es, da jedes Individuum theoretisch eine Vielzahl von Rollen einnehmen kann, möglicherweise zu Konflikten und wie werden diese gelöst (z.B. Medea, Vater-Sohn-Beziehung im Hildebrandslied)? Gibt es Umstände, die einen „Rollentausch“ rechtfertigen und wie ist dieser zu interpretieren? In welchem Verhältnis stehen Realität und Literatur zueinander?
Ein Zusammenwirken literaturwissenschaftlicher, historischer und theologischer Disziplinen wird auf der Nachwuchstagung angestrebt, wobei fiktionale Texte ebenso wie historische Themen im Hinblick auf Geschlechterbeziehungen und auf die Generationenthematik sowohl in soziologischer als auch genealogischer Ausrichtung zu untersuchen sind. |

Since the publication of Kimberlé Crenshaw's formative articles - Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race & Sex (1989), and Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics & Violence Against Women of Color (1994) - the concept of intersectionality has traversed more than a dozen academic disciplines and transnational and popular political discourse, generated multiple conferences, monographs, and anthologies, and animated hundreds of articles and essays. In the twenty years since Crenshaw introduced intersectionality, critiques of identity politics and multiculturalism and, more recently, claims of a "post-racial" era have blossomed. In 2010, we will re-visit the origins of intersectionality as a theoretical frame and site of legal interventions and consider its still unfolding potential for unmasking subordination and provoking social change.

This conference aims to bring together scholars from across the disciplines to investigate the many intersections and problematics of gender, place, and space. Space, place and gender have been key topics in areas such as architecture, law, history, sociology, urban studies, area studies, literary criticism, cultural studies, film studies, and gender.
Scholars are invited to address the issue of gender, place and space through a variety of disciplinary approaches, investigating a wide range of real and imagined places and spaces. They might consider masculine spaces, feminine spaces, queer spaces, or virtual spaces; spaces such as the home, the office, the railroad, the apartment, the museum, the store, the church; the urban, the rural, the suburban; spaces as represented in various texts and discourses; uses of space; theories of space, and more.
Proposals should consist of a 200-word abstract of the paper, a list of three keywords, and a brief biographical statement listing your title, the name of your college or university, and your areas of research and writing.
Please indicate technology needs, such as PowerPoint or DVD.
Proposals are due by September 1, 2009.

The future is nothing if not uncertain: if we turn to face it, we run the risk of losing our bearings. Visions of catastrophe are shot through with glimmers of hope; old injustices and present-day suffering seem endless; social movements demand an alternative future. Meanwhile, back in the political-economic casino, “late” capitalism just keeps getting later, its managers glued to the slots while the floodwaters rise. How might critical thought engage with – or disengage from – the political, social, libidinal, economic and cultural order that claims a monopoly on the future? Are we still able to place a collective wager on the future of theory, the future of political action, and the future of the university as a space of critique? |

„Mädchen die pfeifen, und Hühnern, die krähen, denen soll man beizeiten die Hälse umdrehen“ – die Botschaft dieser volkstümlichen Bosheit macht kulturell festgelegte Kompetenzbereiche zwischen den Geschlechtern deutlich. Stereotype Rollenbilder sind jedoch veränderbar, was einer stetigen Gleichstellungspolitik aller politischen Ebenen bedarf. Daher widmet sich die Tagung den zentralen, gesellschaftspolitisch aktuellen Fragen der Gleichstellungsdebatte ebenso wie den Instrumenten bzw. Methoden der konkreten Umsetzung. Maßnahmen, die auf kommunaler Ebene möglich sind, um einen wirkungsvollen Gender-Ansatz zu erreichen, werden sowohl mittels eines fachlich-theoretischen Inputs als auch durch die Vorstellung von Praxisbeispielen dargestellt.

The Sexuality Network of the ESSHC is seeking to become the leading European arena for new work on the history of sexuality. We welcome proposals for full panels (3-4 papers) as well as offers of individual papers. Papers and panels on all historical periods are welcome.
We are particularly interested in encouraging proposals on histories of sexualities and nationality, ethnicity, post-colonialism, or globalisation. Papers and panels exploring sexualities beyond the "West" however construed are especially encouraged. Papers on methodological or historiographical questions in the history of sexualities, are also strongly encouraged. We want to receive more proposals on sexualities before the modern era too.
Our criteria for inclusion in the programme will be to highlight those panels and papers that display innovation, theoretical rigour, and exciting directions in research into the history of sexuality.
The range of interests covered by the Network are wide and previous gatherings have included work on historical approaches to: sexual activity; sexual identities; heterosexuality; homosexuality; marriage, divorce, extra-marital sex; celibacy, masturbation; fertility and its technologies; sexual subcultures; geographies of sexuality; rural sexualities; prostitution; sexually transmitted disease; HIV/AIDS and sexuality in historical perspective; cultural representations of sexuality; medicalization of sexualities; sex education; moral reform movements; legal regulation of sexuality; sexual violence; globalization and sexuality; historiographical approaches to sexuality; Marxist, queer and feminist historiographies.

In an evermore interconnected world, marked by a full spectrum of interactions between traditions, languages, and ethnic identities, the family understood as the heteropatriarchal unit for societal structuring faces new challenges. In a world where individuality and flexibility are the norm, we witness the twin processes of widening up the traditional definition of the family, concomitantly with the inward-looking, conservative attempt to contain and restrict the allowed definitions of the concept.
Thus, queer and feminist activism and scholarship offer new perspectives and interpretations of the family concept, and call for inclusion of new family constellations in the mainstream debate. In the recent history, the right for same sex marriages, the right for assisted insemination for same sex couples, and the right for adoption by same sex families are just a few examples of painstakingly won rights in countries in the Western hemisphere.
These coexist, however, with appeals for moral reform and an increasing legal regulation of sexualities across the globe. Recently enforced constitutional amendments in various countries stipulate the family as exclusively heterosexual, and political actors across the political spectre (re)-invent traditionalist interpretations of the family concept.
Conservative entities call for a defence of the traditional family and claim virtuous histories, refuting any non-heteronormative definitions of the family. Concomitantly, even more permissive legal regulation of sexualities restricts the (re)definitions of family to a monogamous relationship between two parts. From a historical perspective, the task of (re)producing the nation was the relied strongly on a certain view on the family, but its actual (re)definition requires a (re)conceptualization of the two.
With this in mind, we welcome papers inquiring into the apparently monolithic definition of the family as the constitutive unit of society throughout history. We are particularly interested in exploring historically the (re)definitions of the family concept, in the questioning of the regulatory sexualities (be them hetero- or
homosexual) and their impact on how society is perceived to be structured around the model of nuclear family. We encourage historically aware analyses of how gender, ethnicity, and obsessions of national preservation and reproduction are intersecting to create (new) mythologies of the family. |

A three-day international conference at the University of Liverpool April 14th-16th 2010
The recent upsurge in interest in the history of reading has opened numerous new interpretative avenues for scholars. Women’s reading has attracted particular attention, in specific regions and time periods.
Much of this critical interest has focussed on the idea of leisure reading, however, with the reading of literary texts an especially common theme. This interdisciplinary conference seeks to explore the range of representations and reading practices contained within and encouraged by works which had a solely or largely pedagogical purpose.
What vision of female nature did they propose? How were their textual and editorial strategies specifically adapted to fulfil the perceived needs of the female reading public? How did individual female readers respond to these representations and proposed practices? And how did reading advice and practices change over time?
Points of departure include but are not limited to:
- textual and editorial strategies for advising women
- moral aphorisms for women
- the interplay between educational and leisure reading
- the role of reading in developing women’s civic and domestic duties
- reading as a means to women’s moral and social advancement
- specific reading practices proposed by educational texts or adopted by individual readers

Das gegenwärtig wahrgenommene Konzept von frauenspezifischer bzw. feministischer Biografieforschung begreift sich als ein offenes Programm, das vielfältige Anknüpfungspunkte zu aktuellen theoretischen Diskussionen in der Geschlechterforschung aufweist.
Widmete sich die Biografieforschung mit wenigen Ausnahmen politisch, künstlerisch oder in anderen Lebensbereichen herausragenden Einzelpersönlichkeiten, so wendet sie sich nun vermehrt auch größeren Gruppierungen sowie unauffälligen, aber exemplarisch als wertvoll erachteten Fallstudien und Lebensläufen zu.
Die Rekonstruktion und Analyse von Lebensverläufen und Sinnkonstruktionen – oftmals auf der Basis biografischer Erzählungen oder persönlicher Dokumente – verflicht individuelle Erfahrung und gesellschaftliche Bedingtheit. Geschlechtssensible Interpretationen fokussieren dabei das grundsätzliche Problem der Differenz zwischen der „tatsächlichen“ (historisch überlieferten), der erlebten und der erzählten Lebensgeschichte.
Die Frauenbiografieforschung stellt auf Grund ihres komplexen Forschungsansatzes und durch die sich daraus ergebenden disparaten Ergebnisse seit längerem ein wichtiges Korrektiv zu bislang gültigen wissenschaftlichen Einschätzungen von biografischen Verläufen und Epochen dar. Die These, dass Geschlecht biografisch konstruiert wird, stellt nicht nur eine Weiterentwicklung feministischer Theorien zur sozialen Konstruktion von Geschlecht dar, sondern zeigt auf vielen Ebenen politische und gesellschaftsverändernde Wirkung.
Die Tagung richtet sich an ForscherInnen, deren theoretische Konzepte auf Biografien bezogen sind und diese in der Auseinandersetzung mit gendertheoretischen Erkenntnissen entwickeln.
Die Diskussion verschiedener Forschungsansätze und Voraussetzungen frauenspezifischer Biografik soll Forschungslinien in Theorie und Methodologie freilegen und Anlass zu einer längerfristigen Vernetzung und Vertiefung geben. Insofern soll die Tagung auch der gegenseitigen Information über Arbeitsansätze dienen, um nach gemeinsamen Grundproblemen in personenbezogenen Darstellungsformen zu suchen.

Konflikte beeinflussen Geschlechterverhältnisse: sie können traditionelle Muster festigen oder wiederbeleben, vorhandene Geschlechterverhältnisse verändern oder auflösen oder auch je nach Konfliktphase und Konfliktsituation, nach Grad und Dimension der Gewalt, zwischen diesen Manifestationen oszillieren. Mit ihnen verändert sich auch der Bezug zum Raum und durch eine Veränderung der Lebensräume (bspw. Zerstörung der gebauten Umwelt, Wegfall notwendiger Infrastruktur, Veränderung der Familienzusammensetzung und der sozialen Netze, physische Bedrohung, Notwendigkeit der Verlagerung des Lebensumfeldes) die gesellschaftlichen, familiären und persönlichen Geschlechterverhältnisse beispielsweise in Form von geschlechtlicher Arbeitsteilung und zentralen Normen und Werten.

Compte-tenu du fait que l’éducation, dans les différents âges de l’enfance, est une activité culturelle qui englobe toutes les dimensions de la vie au quotidien, il est opportun d’observer et d’interroger la diversité et l’universalité des cultures de l’enfance et de procéder à une analyse approfondie des
droits culturels de l’enfant. Ce colloque a pour objectif de présenter une analyse spécifique appuyée notamment sur le commentaire de la Déclaration de Fribourg, sur les observations des experts des organes de traités des NU, sur les documents les plus récents des OIG et ONG, ainsi que sur les observations de tous nos partenaires en contextes culturels très divers.

„Geschlecht“: (k)ein Thema in der Lehramtsausbildung?
Perspektiven im Dialog zwischen Genderforschung und Fachdidaktik Deutsch und Geschichte
Oft erwähnt, ja unverzichtbar in den aktuellen Konzepten zu Hochschulpolitik und Fachkompetenzen – in der konkreten Ausbildung aber inhaltlich veraltet, vernachlässigt, belächelt: ist der „Genderaspekt“ zu einer Floskel politischer Korrektheit verkommen? Dabei ist davon auszugehen, dass der Komplex um gender, ethnicity (race) und class eine Schlüsselfunktion für die gegenwärtige Neusortierung und Ordnung der Lebensmodelle, Praktiken und der Wissensvorräte um grundlegende Differenzen, Varietäten und Verhaltensweisen unter den Menschen erfüllt; die entsprechende Forschung ist aus internationalen Projekten nicht mehr wegzudenken. Doch gerade innerhalb der Ausbildung von zukünftigen Lehrerinnen und Lehrern stellt sich die Aufgabe der Vermittlung und Rezeption dieser Arbeiten.
Die Konferenz kombiniert die beiden oft gemeinsam studierten Fächer Deutsch und Geschichte und führt Fachwissenschaftlerinnen und Fachwissenschaftler sowie Fachdidaktikerinnen und Fachdidaktiker aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern, die sich durch Forschungen zu „Gender“ ausgewiesen haben, zu einem Dialog zusammen, um gemeinsam nach Lösungen zu suchen. |

Verhandlungen kultureller, ethnischer, religiöser und geschlechtlicher Identitäten in österreichischer Literatur und Kultur seit der Moderne

Das Thema der MALCA-Konferenz (jährliche Konferenz der Modern Austrian Literature and Culture Association), die im Mai 2010 erstmals in der Geschichte der Gesellschaft in Wien stattfinden wird, ist in zweifacher Hinsicht mit früheren MALCA-Konferenzen verbunden. Einerseits inhaltlich, andererseits in Bezug auf die Erweiterung der methodischen Zugänge, also im Hinblick auf die Reflexion des Paradigmenwechsels von philologischen, textbasierten Kulturmodellen zu einer performativen Auffassung literarischer Texte und kultureller Artefakte insgesamt. Diese performative Sicht wurde innerhalb einer transdisziplinär und kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Literaturwissenschaft entwickelt und setzt sich mit der konstituierenden Kraft von (literarischer) Sprache, der Natur diskursiver Ereignisse and Literatur als Handlung auseinander.
Eine solche Herangehensweise, die auch die nationalstaatliche Sicht auf die Literatur überwindet, ermöglicht es, der regionalen, ethnischen, geschlechtspezifischen, religiösen Differenziertheit menschlichen Zusammenlebens, Handelns und Schaffens auf produktive Weise zu begegnen. Es geht also um die Überkreuzungen verschiedener Identitätsdimensionen, für die die moderne österreichische Literatur und Kultur ein reiches Reservoir an künstlerischer Produktion zur Verfügung stellt. Religiöse Zugehörigkeiten, verbunden mit den Dimensionen „Ethnie“ und „Geschlecht“, spielen in der Geschichte und Gesellschaft Österreichs stets eine sehr große Rolle. Diese Verhandlungen und deren Reflexion sind Thema der Konferenz, die, so das Ziel, dazu beitragen wird, neue interkulturelle Perspektiven zu gewinnen.

Transactions sexuelles
Depuis longtemps, les sciences sociales s’efforcent de distinguer la sexualité « commerciale » et la sexualité « ordinaire », la seconde étant présumée exempte des considérations matérielles impliquées par la première. Si le désordre des familles [1] porte bien sur « le travail et la maison, la fructification du patrimoine, les qualités parentales et conjugales », les théories anthropologiques de l’échange ont néanmoins eu tendance à laisser de côté l’analyse des logiques sociales de la sexualité, dont la fonction centrale demeurait implicite.
L’avènement de la théorie féministe a permis la réintégration explicite de la sexualité au centre de la théorie de l’échange [2], puis progressivement, la dimension « matérielle » de la sexualité a été mise au jour, comme celle des liens familiaux [3]. Au cœur de ces avancées, on doit à Paola Tabet d’avoir élaboré le concept d’échange économico-sexuel, permettant d’analyser les rapports de genre à partir d’une gamme très diverse de configurations sexuelles considérées comme formant un continuum allant du mariage au commerce sexuel [4].
La fécondité de cet outil n’a pas été démentie par la multitude de travaux qui l’ont mobilisé jusqu’au récent développement des recherches sur la sexualité dite transactionnelle dans le contexte du sida, qui a largement confirmé sa pertinence. Mais avec la multiplication des angles de recherche, la théorie de l’échange économico-sexuel laisse aussi apparaître certaines de ses limites, dont la principale est de n’avoir considéré essentiellement qu’une situation, celle des services sexuels procurés aux hommes, sous leur contrôle, par les femmes.
Dans le prolongement de cette ouverture théorique, ce colloque international a pour objectif d’approfondir la réflexion sur la dimension transactionnelle de la sexualité, en élargissant le plus possible les angles d’approche et en incitant à la plus grande diversité thématique.
Parmi les questions abordées, pourront figurer celles relatives au commerce sexuel sous toutes ses formes : des nombreuses composantes de l’industrie du sexe aux diverses modalités de la prostitution, il s’agira d’appréhender l’économie symbolique de la sexualité commerciale, tant du point de vue des prestataires que des usagers ou encore des acteurs non impliqués par un rôle dans la transaction mais néanmoins engagés dans la définition publique du problème.
À la frontière des sociologies de la famille et de la sexualité, la matérialité des relations conjugales pourra être interrogée. La reconnaissance des formes nouvelles de conjugalité (ouverture du mariage ou de nouveaux contrats d’union entre personnes de même sexe, concubinage, union libre, etc.) implique aussi des conceptions et des pratiques nouvelles concernant par exemple la circulation de l’argent des ménages ou les enjeux socio-économiques des nouvelles patri-/matrimonialités.
Par ailleurs, des contextes dans lesquels sont impliqués des personnes âgées, des malades chroniques, des handicapés, posent, en termes de transactions sexuelles, des questions sur le maintien d’une activité sexuelle au nom d’une certaine « qualité de vie », d’un bien-être. Des stratégies au sein des couples se mettent en place pour « sauver une sexualité à tout prix ». Des pratiques sociales de la sexualité, objet de transaction, au sens d’un « marché de la santé » se développent, allant de la médication (recours licites ou illicites aux produits/médicaments) à la mise en place d’offres de services sexuels. En revanche, d’autres sont contraints à « cesser toute sexualité », ou encore s’y contraignent au nom de leur réussite sociale (études, carrière, etc.).
L’analyse des transactions ordinairement associées à la sexualité s’est considérablement développée au cours des dernières années [5], notamment en Afrique, mais aussi en Asie ou en Amérique latine, dans le contexte du VIH/sida. Il apparaît souhaitable de prolonger cet effort en explorant tout particulièrement les dimensions les moins documentées. Longtemps mise au service d’une analyse centrée sur les rapports hétérosexuels et marqués par la domination masculine, la théorie de l’échange économico-sexuel pourra être envisagée à l’aune de situations plus diverses telles que la rétribution de services sexuels masculins, les transactions homosexuelles ou les relations interraciales.
En traitant des transactions sexuelles, ce colloque permettra de revenir sur certaines oppositions convenues au sujet de la sexualité, entre plaisir et contrainte, égalité et domination, amour et profit, santé et risque, etc.
Les propositions de communications pourront porter sur toutes les régions du monde et relever de l’ensemble des sciences sociales. Wie andere Menschenrechtsübereinkommen ist auch das Übereinkommen CEDAW mit der Ratifizierung geltendes Recht in der Schweiz geworden. Seine Bestimmungen präzisieren das Diskriminierungsverbot für verschiedene Lebensbereiche. Das Zusatzprotokoll sieht ein «Mitteilungsverfahren» vor, das betroffenen Frauen die Möglichkeit öffnet, sich beim CEDAW-Ausschuss zu beschweren, wenn sie sich in ihren Rechten verletzt fühlen. Der Workshop wird von der Eidgenössischen Kommission für Frauenfragen EKF in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bundesamt für Justiz BJ und der Direktion für Völkerrecht DV organisiert und richtet sich an praktizierende Anwältinnen und Anwälte. Er soll ihnen Gelegenheit geben, sich mit dem Übereinkommen CEDAW, seinen Möglichkeiten und Grenzen vertraut zu machen.

Le Protocole additionnel à la CEDEF prévoit une «procédure de communication» offrant aux femmes la possibilité de se plaindre au Comité CEDEF en cas de violation de leurs droits. Cet atelier est organisé par la commission fédérale des questions féminines CFQF en collaboration avec l’office fédéral de la Justice OFJ et la direction du droit international public DDIP. The international conference Performances of Memory in the Arts pursues a new line of research in the crossover between Performance Studies and Memory Studies. By understanding memory as a performance, the organizers of the conference shift the focus to artistic practices of cultural memory. Art and popular culture enact memory and generate processes of memory. They do memory, and in this doing of memory new questions about the cultural dimensions of memory arise: How do art objects and artistic practices perform the past in the present? What is their relationship to the archive? Does the past speak in the performed past (or do we speak to it)? To what purpose do objects ‘remember’? And for whom do they remember (or forget)?
The performative turn helps to understand cultural memory as a process of dealing with the past in the present that is embodied and mediated, linking a present to a past and to a future. Inviting a reconsideration of the persistence of the historical past in the present, it centers not only on nostalgic or ‘presentist’ aspects of cultural memory, but also on its historical and historicizing – as well as its utopian – facets. The concept of a performance of memory crucially opens up to the practice of ‘doing memory’. Cultural memory is being performed in the codes of the art work. Art and popular culture are dynamic processes that mediate memory through narrative strategies, visual and aural styles, intertextual references and intermedial relations, re-enactments and ritual performances. They are thus engaged in non-linear processes of remembering and forgetting, collapsing time and space, and bringing the vicissitudes of desires, memories, and affects to the fore.
Central questions for this conference are: how do art objects and practices perform the past in the present? And how do they open up possibilities for a different future? How do art and popular culture ‘do memory’? And what kinds of memory do they ‘do’? We are particularly interested:
- in analyses of what is at stake in the complex processes of remembering and forgetting, of recollecting and disremembering, of amnesia and anamnesis that make up cultural memory;
- in studies of how memory, performance and affect are contingent on one another in their relation to time, both looking forwards and backwards, while being performed in the present;
- and in explorations of how art and popular culture, in performing affective memories, may produce a relevant experience for the spectator, listener or reader.
The conference aims at covering a wide range of artistic disciplines: fine arts, literature, music, cinema, theatre, digital media and fashion. We welcome proposals for papers as well as for three-paper panels.

Ausgangspunkt der Tagung sind die öffentliche Kontroverse über eine Benachtei-ligung von Jungen im Bildungssystem und die diversen und kontroversen Versuche, das dort beobachtbare Geschlechterverhältnis zu interpretieren. Die öffentliche Debatte ist geprägt von Halbwahrheiten (und Un-Wahrheiten), von Vereinfachungen und Schuldzuweisungen, hinter denen die Komplexität der Geschlechterverhältnisse im Bildungssystem zu verschwinden droht.
Deshalb wird der Topos der "Krise der Männlichkeit" als Ausgangspunkt und Rahmung des Tagungsprogramms genommen, um von dort aus die Frage nach der Notwendigkeit einer Pädagogik für Jungen mit Bezug auf aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zu diskutieren.

The conference seeks to explore how desire not only sustains current economies, but also carries the potential for inciting new forms of understanding and doing economy. We propose to focus on the notion of desire as a tool to explore economy’s sexual dimension as much as the economic dimension of sexuality. Drawing on Queer Theory we understand desire as historically structured by heterosexual norms, while simultaneously functioning as a structuring force itself – thus inscribing reproductive heteronormativity to subjectivity and society. Presuming that desire can be envisioned beyond heteronormative restrictions and that this bears on the idea of justice, the question arises whether the pursuit of economic and sexual justice can be made to coincide when economy is queered by desire. Rather than a realisable universal norm, the term justice is employed as a contestable term, offering possibility for debate and political practice. The conference's twin interest lies in unpacking how sexuality is implicit in economic processes and in unfolding how economy is linked to sexuality. How do current global economic processes (including production, reproduction, consumption, circulation, speculation) constitute specific sexual identities and practices that collaborate in relations of exploitation, domination, and subjectivation? Conversely, how do ways of organizing sexuality influence economic processes?
In addition to exploring the reciprocal relation between sexuality and economy, the conference inquires into how a queer reconceptualization of desire may emerge as a destabilizing and transformative force in economic relations. One of the aims of the conference is to fashion space for imagining “other” economies or imagining economy “otherwise”, as well as for the deployment of the concept of desire in ways that allow for a reworking of social relationships and economic practices. The presumption here is that global capitalism is not a monolith; rather, there exist diverse capitalisms and diverse economies. For instance, economic practices in the fields of migration and diasporas, subcultural economies, gift and barter economies and cooperative economies do not all conform to the capitalist logics.
“Desiring Just Economies / Just Economies of Desire” is an international, transdisciplinary conference that welcomes a wide range of presentations, from academic papers to experimental writing, lecture performances, and visual presentations. „Desiring Just Economies / Just Economies of Desire“ fragt danach, wie Begehren aktuelle Ökonomien aufrecht erhält, jedoch auch das Potenzial birgt, neue Formen des Wirtschaftens oder des Verständnisses von Wirtschaft zu inspirieren. Wir schlagen vor, dass Begehren sowohl Zugänge eröffnet, um die sexuellen Dimensionen der Ökonomie als auch die ökonomischen Dimensionen der Sexualität zu untersuchen. In der Annahme, dass Begehren jenseits heteronormativer Prämissen verstanden werden kann, und dass hinter dieser Annahme ein Streben nach Gerechtigkeit (sexual justice) steht, entwickelt sich die Frage: Treffen sich das Anliegen sexueller Gerechtigkeit und das Anliegen ökonomischer Gerechtigkeit, wenn das Begehren die Ökonomie queered? Die Konferenz verfolgt also die dreifache Perspektive, deutlich zu machen, wie Sexualität den Wirtschaftsprozessen eingeschrieben ist, wie Ökonomie sexuelle Verhältnisse bestimmt, und was beides mit Gerechtigkeit zu tun hat bzw. mit Unrechtserfahrungen verbunden ist. Inwiefern bringen gegenwärtige Globalisierungsprozesse (der Produktion, Reproduktion, Konsumtion, Zirkulation und Spekulation) spezifische sexuelle Identitäten und Praktiken hervor, die in unterschiedlicher Weise in Ausbeutungs- Dominanz- und Unterwerfungsprozesse verwickelt sind? Und umgekehrt, wie kann über die Art, wie Sexualität organisiert ist, auf Wirtschaftsprozesse Einfluss genommen werden?

Questions of gender and sexualities are essential to understand politics of race and nation at different levels of analysis, whether the local, the national, or the global. Drawing on what David Goldberg called the 'liberal paradox', i.e. how the commitment of modernity to idealized principles of liberty and equality goes hand in hand with a multiplication of racialized identities and the sets of exclusions they prompt and rationalize, enable and sustain (Goldberg 1993), the proposed session will tackle the ways in which ethnocultural exclusion and racialization processes in western liberal democracies currently operate through the problematization of minority/migrant gender relations and sexualities. We are particularly interested in the current mobilizations of women's rights and gay rights to construe the 'civilized' space of western freedoms and their 'enemies'. Besides the critique of these exclusionary discourses and practices, we welcome contributions engaging with questions of resistance/emancipation and counter-hegemonic practices, and providing frameworks for developing knowledge that lessen domination.
Identified thematic areas for papers include but not limited to:
* Articulations of sexuality and nationalism: recent developments and historical legacies
* The 'war on terror' and 'progressive' politics of sexuality
* Regulatory controls over migrant gender norms, sexualities and bodies

This joint Ph.D. course and conference sets out to investigate the nexus between processes of subjectivation and various forms of colonial and postcolonial governance. Subjectivation refers to processes whereby new moral subjects are coming into being via practices of the self. Within dissimilar colonial and postcolonial projects, however, subjectivation took many different forms, happened on different levels, and can be examined and understood in multiple ways. In colonies and metropoles, for example, states, educational and scientific institutions, missionary societies, philanthropists and many other agents used various educational techniques to mould the bodies and minds of children, men and women so as to fit the roles considered appropriate to their particular gender, race, or class. Questions of childrearing, childhood, and education in colonies, metropoles, and postcolonial societies figured centrally in these processes of subjectivation. Likewise, processes of subjectivation are often linked with the introduction of technologies, which create new lifestyles and types of subjects who are better suited to inhabit a colonial or postcolonial world structured according to certain technologies. Recently, however, the idea that colonial rule depended on making certain types of subjectivity has also been questioned.
Rather, it is argued, colonial rule depended on a more traditional kind of authority. Doubt has also been raised about the extent to which processes of subjectivation can adequately grasp the interactions between colonial power systems and indigenous people.

Performing European Feminist Futures: 1968 & 1989
The 2010 edition of the NOISE Summer School goes back to the future. It revisits events that structured European feminist historiographies in a future-oriented way. Having recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the events that shook the world in May ’68 and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, it is time to reflect upon these events and their relation to each other, and to the here and now from a European feminist perspective. How did these events shape European feminist futures? How did they affect the notions of (former) East and (former) West in Europe? How are they represented in our current-day feminist academic, artistic, and activist projects?

In a knowledge society, research questions, processes and results cannot be disconnected
from everyday practices. Politicians, funding bodies and society at large increasingly demand of
researchers to propose efficient ways of how to use abstract findings in concrete situations and
as a common good. From the very start, implementation strategies should therefore include
processes of embedding the research in its social and scientific contexts, recursiveness and
negotiation with non-academic actors, and testing the expected impact through ‘real-world’
experiments. How exactly to bring research results to fruition, integrate theory and practice and
build truly participative collaborations are key issues of inter- and transdisciplinarity.

Migration has transformed feminists' ideological conflict about the meaning of prostitution. From being a two-sided debate about whether 'sex work is work' or 'violence against women', the discussion now must consider migration policies that favour 'highly skilled', white-collar and technical professionals over those willing to take less prestigious jobs in the informal sector, including the sex industry.
Researchers working in the realm of migration and sex work and wishing to present a paper (15 minutes, followed by a 30 minutes discussion) are asked to send a title, and an abstract till August 15 to: Janine.dahinden@unine.ch

Asia is shaping up to be a leader in global development in the new millennium. Some argue that the centre of gravity of the world’s economy is shifting from West to East. Many Asian countries are investing heavily in research and development (especially in IT and biotech) transforming ‘made in’ economies into ‘designed in’ economies. And, in the process, levels of income, education and health-care have continued to rise for a large part of Asia’s fast-growing middle class.
The conference welcomes papers relating to one of the themes of the conference panels and workshops. Call for papers and instructions on submission of abstracts can be found on the individual panel/workshop subsites. |
