The post-graduate schools give the students the opportunity to write their PhD thesis within a reseach study programme.

Doctoral schools in Gender Studies, Switzerland

A network of post-graduate programmes in gender studies exists in Switzerland since 2002. The network includes four post-graduate schools, which are located at the Universities of Basel, Berne (in cooperation with Fribourg), Geneva (in cooperation with Lausanne and Neuchâtel) and Zurich. These schools are providing tutorial support and working space for postgraduate students working on gender issues. They are organised as a three-year, interdisciplinary network that offers workshops and seminars at local as well as national levels and are aiming to support the students in their PhD work.

The last post-graduate school covered the years 2005-2008. It was a cooperation project between the Swiss University Conference and the participating universities.

Since Mai 2006 the Swiss network of post-graduate schools in gender studies has been officially accredited as the first post-graduated programme by the Swiss University Conference.
Director of the Swiss program: Prof. Dr. Andrea Maihofer (University of Basel),
Prof. Dr. Regina Wecker (University of Basel)
Coordinator of the Swiss program:
Dr. Katrin Meyer (University of Basel)

The current postgraduate programme covers the years 2008-2011. It is a cooperation project between the Swiss University Conference and the participating universities. Since April 2006 the Swiss network of  research training groups in gender studies has been officially accredited as graduate programme by the Swiss University Conference.

The post-graduate schools aim at actively supporting the researches willing to write a PhD thesis in social and human sciences, in law or psychology, with a strong gender perspective.

The main worry of the post-graduate schools is to support, in an optimal way, the research projects by offering an individual and collective supervision as well as productive working relationships.
Besides, the post-graduate schools offer focused programme to the students, including theoretical and methodological workshops. This stimulating environment provides students with highly qualified support from their programme responsibles and other national and international experts. Moreover it allows them to develop contacts with their peers, to participate in national and international networks as well as to gain new communicational and transdisciplinary reflexion skills.

In order to participate to a post-graduate school, a thesis project with gender as central analysis category must be submitted. It is also necessary that the future students show great interest in interdisciplinary exchanges. Finally, future students have to be committed to their work.
The fact of being student in a post-graduate school gives no right for a scholarship.
